David Gray Urges Hibernian to Challenge Celtic in Premiership Race
David Gray, manager of Hibernian, has challenged his team to seize the opportunity to overtake second-placed Celtic in the Scottish Premiership standings. Hibernian, currently in good form with four wins out of their last six matches, will face Motherwell on March 5, 2024, in a crucial midweek fixture. A victory at Fir Park would bring Hibernian within just one point of the defending champions Celtic, who they will meet in an important match on March 10.
Gray stated, “We’re the only fixture tomorrow night so it gives us that opportunity.” He acknowledged the challenge ahead, emphasizing that winning against Motherwell could be pivotal. “If you can go and win the game tomorrow and then off the back of that, you’re playing against the team directly above you at the minute, so if you go and get six points, you could go above them,” he added.
The Hibernian manager also pointed out that a win would narrow their gap to table-topping city rivals Hearts to six points. Hearts have struggled recently, winning only one of their last four matches. Former Scotland international Pat Nevin has suggested that the Premiership could become “a four-way title race” involving Rangers, Celtic, Hearts, and Hibernian.
Gray is focused on the immediate challenge, stating, “We’ve got a chance tomorrow night to take another three points closer to where we want to get to. And that’s all we’re thinking about.” He emphasized the importance of remaining focused on their performance rather than being distracted by other teams.
As Hibernian prepares for the match, they will be without Josh Campbell and Rudi Molotnikov due to injuries. However, Miguel Chaiwa and Alasana Manneh are back in contention, and captain Joe Newell has returned to the squad after being sidelined since December. Gray expressed his satisfaction at Newell’s return, highlighting his positive influence on the team.
“It’s great to have Joe back in the squad. Even just his voice before the game and during the game, I can hear him on the bench,” Gray mentioned. He acknowledged the competition for places but underscored Newell’s commitment to the team’s success.
As Hibernian gears up for this critical match, the team appears determined to make their mark in the league. With significant fixtures against Hearts, Rangers, and Celtic looming ahead, Gray’s focus on small, achievable targets could be the key to their ambitions this season.
