Docherty Signals Changes After Staggies’ Defeat to Airdrieonians
Ross County manager Tony Docherty has indicated that changes may be on the horizon following his team’s 2-1 defeat to Airdrieonians on October 21, 2023. This loss, a pivotal encounter at the bottom of the Championship table held at the Global Energy Stadium in Dingwall, has left the Staggies at the foot of the division. Docherty expressed his frustration, suggesting that the situation feels repetitive and that a new strategy may be necessary.
The match against Airdrieonians showcased a familiar pattern for Ross County, as counterattacks once again led to their downfall. Docherty reflected on the game, stating, “It’s like Groundhog Day. Even in the first home game I took charge of, we dominated possession and we’ve been done on the counter attack.” Despite a solid first half, his side succumbed to a poor defensive lapse, resulting in a disappointing second goal for their opponents.
Docherty emphasized the need for a change in personnel to break the cycle of losing. “We can’t have the same pattern game after game because if that continues, we’ll be in the same position in the second half of the season,” he noted. He acknowledged that the team possesses talented players but recognized a recurring mentality that leads to defeats.
In the closing moments of the match, Ross County attempted to rally. Docherty commended the support from the fans, who remained vocal until the final whistle. “I can understand them venting their frustration at the end, but I made a point of going round them because I thought they were brilliant,” he said. Despite the loss, he appreciated their unwavering backing, particularly in the last 15 minutes.
The manager reiterated his goal of transforming the Global Energy Stadium into a fortress, asserting that the fans have played their part in supporting the team. Yet, he admitted a disconnect between the players’ performance and the expectations of the supporters. “Every game matters. I’m sick of saying that I want to make this place a fortress – I can’t produce that on the pitch,” Docherty added.
As Ross County faces the challenges ahead, the focus remains on addressing the issues that have plagued the team. With a determined approach, Docherty aims to shift the momentum and restore confidence as they navigate the rest of the Championship season.
