Driver Paul Doyle Sentenced for Using Car as Weapon in Parade Rampage
A driver has been sentenced for deliberately using his vehicle to injure over 100 people during a celebration in Liverpool, marking a tragic event that turned a joyous occasion into a scene of chaos and horror. Paul Doyle, 54, expressed remorse, stating, “I’ve just ruined my family’s life,” as he faced the consequences of his actions in court.
Doyle, who has been described as a “family man,” was recorded displaying aggressive behavior while driving his Ford Galaxy, which weighs almost two tonnes. During a two-minute rampage on May 26, 2023, he collided with a crowd gathered for a victory parade, causing serious injuries to numerous individuals, including children. Prosecutors presented evidence of Doyle’s rage, asserting that he was willing to inflict harm to achieve his aim of forcing his way through the crowd.
Details of the Incident
The court heard that Doyle had previously pleaded guilty to 31 charges, including dangerous driving, affray, and multiple counts of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent. His actions resulted in injuries to 29 victims, aged between six months and 77 years. The youngest victim, Teddy Eveson, was reportedly thrown approximately 15 feet from his pram during the incident, which has raised significant public concern regarding pedestrian safety in crowded areas.
Prosecutor Paul Greaney KC highlighted the gravity of the incident, stating, “The prosecution case is that the defendant had used the vehicle as a weapon.” The prosecution emphasized that Doyle had an opportunity to stop and seek help from nearby police officers but chose to continue his reckless actions instead.
Eyewitness accounts portrayed the drastic shift in atmosphere as Doyle’s vehicle approached. Daniel Barr, a man hailed as a “hero,” intervened by jumping into the back of the car and managing to put it in park just before the rampage ended. Barr noted the crowd’s joyful demeanor quickly turned to panic as people realized the danger, with children being pulled out of harm’s way.
Emotional Reactions in Court
During the court proceedings, horrific dashcam footage was shown multiple times, capturing Doyle’s aggressive behavior as he shouted at pedestrians to move aside. The footage depicted moments of chaos, with victims being thrown into the air and a pram overturned amidst the crowd. Doyle was visibly emotional, often burying his face in his hands as the scenes unfolded on screen.
The court was filled with tears as victims and their families watched the harrowing evidence. Prosecutor Greaney remarked on the shocking nature of the footage, stating, “What we are seeing there is a man in a rage, whose anger had completely taken hold of him.”
Doyle’s actions have raised significant concerns about public safety during large gatherings. The aftermath of the incident has left many questioning how such a tragedy could occur in what was meant to be a celebratory environment.
Doyle was arrested shortly after the incident and charged within the week. He had initially denied the charges but later changed his plea. The court has emphasized that despite his earlier intentions to collect friends from the celebrations, his decision to drive into the crowd was reckless and unforgivable.
As the sentencing concluded, the court reiterated the severe consequences of Doyle’s actions, reminding him that he bore responsibility for the devastation he caused. The community continues to grapple with the aftermath of the event, as families and victims seek recovery from the traumatic experience.
