Dušanka Belada-Bošković Explores Identity and Ecology in “Potop”
The long-awaited premiere of the feature film “Potop,” directed by Dušanka Belada-Bošković, took place on November 26 at the Sinepleks cinema in Podgorica. The film delves into complex themes of identity, ecology, and the chronic divisions within Montenegrin society. Set against the backdrop of an ecological and urban controversy surrounding the planned submergence of Šavnik and a referendum on a hydroelectric power plant, “Potop” raises critical questions about societal values and environmental stewardship.
Belada-Bošković’s film does not provide easy answers or take a definitive stance. Instead, it creates an atmosphere where nature plays a vital role, embodying the unseen fears of loss and the struggle for understanding. Speaking to Pobjeda, the director highlighted the multifaceted nature of the title “Potop,” suggesting it serves as an allegory for the submersion of moral and societal values, as well as the literal drowning of Šavnik.
The director explained that the residents of Šavnik witnessed the submersion of Plužine in the 1960s during the construction of the Piva hydroelectric plant. This historical event continues to evoke mixed opinions among the populace. “For some, the flooding marked the beginning of development, while others viewed it as a cultural genocide,” Belada-Bošković said. The current situation mirrors this past conflict; for some, the flooding of a river represents disaster, while for others, it signifies a new beginning.
In discussing the film’s approach to societal polarization, Belada-Bošković noted, “The black-and-white world we live in is one of the greatest challenges our society faces.” Through the characters and their conflicts, the film illustrates how rigid beliefs hinder genuine dialogue. She expressed hope that increased openness and willingness to listen could significantly improve societal conditions and help resolve chronic conflicts.
Nature plays a prominent, almost symbolic role in “Potop.” Belada-Bošković aimed to visually connect the beauty of Montenegro with ecological messages and questions of environmental preservation. “I fear that Montenegro is only an ecological state on a declarative level,” she stated, emphasizing that many citizens still lack awareness and responsibility towards natural resources. The film seeks to showcase the unique and fragile beauty of Montenegro, reminding viewers of the urgent need for ecological consciousness.
Reflecting on her transition from theater to film, Belada-Bošković explained that her initial passion for film was reignited during the production of “Potop.” Although her professional background is rooted in theater, she saw this project as a long-term commitment to her artistic journey. “This leap into cinematography is a natural continuation of my artistic path,” she noted, highlighting the rich potential within Montenegro’s film industry.
Much of the film’s crew consists of local talent, with production support from Radio-televizija Crne Gore (RTCG). Belada-Bošković expressed confidence in Montenegro’s capacity to produce significant film projects independently. “I believe Montenegro has qualified personnel capable of executing serious film projects,” she stated, acknowledging the challenges posed by a small market and internal divisions. Despite these hurdles, she remains optimistic that collaboration and unity among creators can yield exceptional results.
As “Potop” continues to resonate with audiences, it serves as a poignant reminder of the intricate relationship between identity, ecology, and societal values in Montenegro. Through her artistic lens, Belada-Bošković invites viewers to reflect on the deeper implications of their choices and relationships, ultimately advocating for a more connected and conscious society.
