Gillingham Defender Max Clark Feels Boost From Chairman Galinson’s Return
Gillingham FC defender Max Clark expressed optimism following the return of chairman Brad Galinson to the club. The team is set to resume their League 2 campaign at Priestfield Stadium on Saturday, January 6, 2024, against Newport County. Galinson’s presence is seen as a morale booster, particularly after Gillingham endured a challenging stretch, failing to secure a win in their last nine league matches.
Positive Energy from Leadership
Clark highlighted the positive impact of Galinson’s return from the United States, stating, “It’s always nice to have him around the place. He gives a great energy. He’s so positive and everyone loves to see him around.” The left-back emphasized that Galinson’s enthusiasm for the team motivates players to perform better, knowing they have the chairman’s support. “You know he’s backing you because that’s why he’s brought you here. You want to show that you can kick on more for him,” Clark added.
With a two-week break from fixtures, Gillingham has focused on refining their training regimen. Clark noted, “We’re really looking forward to the game. It feels like a long time since we last played and it’s given us a chance to work on things in training.” The team aims to translate this renewed energy into a strong performance against Newport, who currently sit at the bottom of the league table.
Challenging Opponent Ahead
Gillingham previously secured three points against Newport earlier this season, but Clark anticipates a different challenge this time. With Newport having changed their manager and made several new signings during the transfer window, he expects a revamped squad. “It’ll be a tough task. They’ve got a good manager there and they’ve brought in some good players,” Clark stated, referencing Christian Fuchs as the new manager and mentioning notable additions like Harrison Biggins.
Despite a recent 2-0 loss to Swindon Town, Clark remains confident in the squad’s abilities. “We played on the front foot and were positive in that game. We just obviously didn’t get a result, and it’s a result-based business,” he remarked. He believes the recent break has allowed the team to improve their attacking strategies, particularly in the final third. “We’ve been working on what we can do better in the final third, the end product, and just getting players in different positions,” he added.
Gillingham manager Gareth Ainsworth has indicated the club is close to finalizing a new addition to the squad, further enhancing their capabilities as they head into the second half of the season. As the players prepare to take the field once again, Clark emphasized the importance of teamwork in their quest for goals. “Don’t put too much pressure on the strikers because we need to be better. We all need to work together to help each other out,” he said.
Looking ahead, Gillingham aims to turn their fortunes around, with Clark expressing optimism that the team can build on their recent training and the chairman’s uplifting presence to secure a crucial victory this weekend.
