Haaland Calls Man City’s UCL Loss to Bodø/Glimt “Embarrassing”
Manchester City faced a shocking defeat in the UEFA Champions League, losing 1-0 to Norwegian underdogs Bodø/Glimt on March 12, 2024. Striker Erling Haaland described the loss as “embarrassing,” reflecting the disappointment of the team and its supporters. This result follows a lackluster performance against their local rivals, where City was outplayed in a 2-0 loss.
During the match against Bodø/Glimt, City not only struggled to find the net but also saw star midfielder Rodri sent off after receiving two yellow cards in quick succession. The defeat was particularly disheartening as it marked a continuation of City’s recent poor form, with just two wins in their last seven matches across all competitions. One of those victories came against third-tier club Exeter in the FA Cup.
Guardiola Acknowledges Team’s Struggles
In a post-match interview, manager Pep Guardiola admitted that “everything is going wrong” for the team at present. City began the seventh round of the Champions League in fourth place but now faces the risk of dropping out of the automatic qualification positions. Teams finishing in positions 9-24 will have to navigate the playoffs for a chance at advancing.
“Today was an incredible opportunity for us, but everything is going wrong, going against us in many details,” Guardiola stated. “We have to try to change it.”
Guardiola pointed to the team’s injury woes as a contributing factor, particularly in defense, where key players are sidelined. The absence of defenders has left City vulnerable, and the manager noted that the squad was lacking important players who provide stability. They now look ahead to a crucial match against Wolverhampton Wanderers, which will be pivotal for their Champions League ambitions.
Haaland’s Apology to Supporters
Haaland, who has had a difficult run of form himself, took responsibility for the team’s failures during his interview with TNT Sports. “I don’t have the answers. I take full responsibility for not being able to score the goals I should do,” he said. He extended an apology to the supporters, acknowledging the disappointment felt by fans who traveled to witness the match.
The striker continued, “Bodø played some incredible football, and in the end, it’s deserved. Honestly, I don’t know what to say because I don’t have the answers, and what I can say is sorry.”
As the team prepares for their upcoming matches against Wolves and Galatasaray, the urgency to reverse their fortunes in the Champions League has never been greater. With only one week remaining in the group stage, City must regroup and find a way to regain their competitive edge.
Guardiola remains resolute in his belief that the players have the capability to turn things around but emphasizes the need to address the current dynamics swiftly. A strong performance in the upcoming matches is crucial for City to secure their place in the knockout stages of the tournament.
