Haji Wright Shines as USMNT Defeats Australia 2-1 in Friendly
In a thrilling friendly on October 10, 2023, the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) triumphed over Australia with a score of 2-1. Haji Wright, the Coventry City striker, played a pivotal role, scoring both goals that propelled the U.S. to victory. This match marked a significant turning point as it ended Australia’s impressive 11-match unbeaten streak under manager Tony Popovic.
Both of Wright’s goals were assisted by midfielder Cristian Roldan, showcasing a strong offensive partnership. The U.S. managed to overcome an early setback when Australian defender Jordan Bos netted the opener in the 19th minute. This victory extended the USMNT’s unbeaten run to three matches and highlighted the team’s resilience, particularly under head coach Mauricio Pochettino.
Wright Boosts Striker Competition
Wright’s performance has intensified the competition for the starting striker position on the USMNT. Folarin Balogun, who had scored in his last two appearances, was expected to secure the role. Instead, Pochettino’s decision to start Wright proved to be strategic. Initially appearing hesitant, Wright found his rhythm by scoring in the 33rd minute, converting Roldan’s assist with a right-footed shot past goalkeeper Mathew Ryan.
His second goal came shortly after halftime, as he capitalized on another Roldan pass, leaving Australian defender Cameron Burgess behind and curling his shot into the net. While Balogun remains a strong contender for the starting spot, Wright’s brace significantly enhances his chances of making the World Cup roster.
Australia’s Streak Comes to an End
Australia’s defeat marks a disappointing end to their solid run under Popovic, having achieved seven victories in their prior matches. The team had established a reputation for strong defensive capabilities, but lapses in concentration allowed Wright to exploit their weaknesses. Although the loss does not severely impact Australia’s FIFA ranking, it complicates their prospects for a favorable draw in the upcoming World Cup.
Despite the setback, the Socceroos can take some solace from Bos’s performance. The left wing-back’s goal demonstrated his skill as he maneuvered through the U.S. defense to net the opening goal. Bos, recently named Eredivisie Player of the Month, continues to emerge as a standout talent for Australia.
Roldan’s Impact and Pulisic’s Injury Concerns
Roldan’s performance further solidified his case for a World Cup spot. Just two months prior, he seemed unlikely to make the roster. However, he has rebounded impressively, contributing significantly in both attack and defense. After assisting Wright’s first goal, Roldan quickly adapted after the initial setback, making crucial plays that kept the U.S. in the game.
In contrast, the match took a concerning turn for star player Christian Pulisic, who was forced off the field after just 17 minutes due to an ankle injury. The nature of the injury remains unclear, but it raises concerns about his availability for upcoming matches. Given his key role for both the U.S. national team and AC Milan, his absence would be a notable loss as the World Cup approaches.
As the USMNT prepares for its path to the World Cup, this victory not only boosts morale but also sharpens the competition for roster spots. With players like Wright and Roldan stepping up, the team is positioning itself for a solid performance in the international arena. Meanwhile, Australia’s loss serves as a wake-up call, as they must regroup and refocus ahead of their upcoming fixtures.
