Herta Remains Silent Amid F2 Speculation as IndyCar Season Finale Approaches
As the IndyCar season reaches its climax this weekend at the Nashville Superspeedway, driver Colton Herta remains tight-lipped regarding rumors that he may transition to the Formula 2 circuit. These speculations arise from Herta’s need to accumulate points for the super license required to compete in Formula 1.
Herta, a prominent figure in IndyCar and a two-time champion with Andretti Global, declined to comment on multiple occasions when questioned about the possibility of moving to F2. The speculation intensified following reports that Dan Towriss, the team owner of Andretti Global, might consider replacing Herta with another driver. This could pave the way for Herta to join an F2 team as he seeks to secure the necessary points to qualify for a super license.
Towriss is currently focused on the newly announced Cadillac F1 team, which recently confirmed Valtteri Bottas as part of its driver lineup for the 2026 season. The F1 project, initiated in 2021 under former team owner Michael Andretti, aimed to establish a genuine American presence in the sport. However, Herta, who has not yet met the super license criteria, was not considered for one of the Cadillac seats.
When approached by The Associated Press, Herta stated, “Oh boy, I don’t really have any comments for any of that stuff, to be honest.” When pressed to clarify his position, he acknowledged the ongoing speculation but shifted the conversation, implying that it might enhance his visibility and marketability.
Towriss did address Herta’s situation during the announcement of the F1 lineup, explaining that Herta was not a viable option due to his lack of a super license. When asked specifically if there were plans to transfer Herta to an F2 team, Towriss responded, “That’s not what we’re reporting today,” indicating that definitive plans regarding Herta’s future in racing remain uncertain.
Herta, aged 25, is in his seventh season with IndyCar, boasting a total of nine career victories. He achieved his best career finish in the standings last year, placing second overall, but heads into the season finale this year without a win and ranked sixth in points. His teammate from Chip Ganassi Racing has already secured the championship title two races prior.
As the IndyCar season concludes and the F1 landscape evolves, the future of Colton Herta remains a topic of intrigue for fans and analysts alike. The coming days may provide further clarity on whether Herta will make a leap into Formula 2 or continue his pursuit of success within IndyCar.
