Hull KR Sets Record with 104-0 Challenge Cup Victory Over Lock Lane
Hull Kingston Rovers (Hull KR) achieved a remarkable feat by defeating Lock Lane 104-0 in the Challenge Cup, marking their largest-ever victory. This emphatic win not only showcased the team’s dominance but also highlighted the impressive performances of four debutants, including academy product Harvey Horne, who made a significant impact on his senior debut.
Willie Peters, the head coach of Hull KR, expressed his delight with the debutants following the match at Sewell Group Craven Park. Horne, just 20 years old, shone brightly by scoring a hat-trick, while fellow newcomers Karl Lawton, Tom Whitehead, and Jack Charles also made their first official appearances for the club. Each contributed to the team’s record-breaking performance, with Peters noting, “I thought they all did well.”
Horne’s debut was particularly noteworthy. Peters praised his eagerness and decision-making on the field: “Every time he carried the ball, he did it with intent… The way he runs and the choices he made, I thought he made some really good decisions tonight.” Lawton’s versatility also impressed, as he transitioned from hooker to lock during the match, while Whitehead was effective in a straightforward role at prop. Peters commented, “We wanted him to keep it nice and simple.” Charles displayed promise with several commendable plays in the second half, reinforcing the coaching staff’s strategy of simplifying his role.
While the match was a showcase of Hull KR’s prowess, Peters took time to commend Lock Lane, the amateur side from Castleford, for their spirited performance. “I thought Lock Lane came out firing,” he remarked. Despite the scoreline, the amateur team showed resilience, particularly in the early stages of the game. Peters acknowledged the fitness disparity between the teams but was pleased with how Lock Lane continued to push forward.
The 104-0 scoreline not only signifies Hull KR’s largest victory but also surpasses the previous record of 100-6 against Nottingham City in August 1990. The match also saw back-rower Rhyse Martin set a new club record for the most conversions in a single game, successfully converting 16 out of 18 tries in challenging wet conditions. “To do that as a team is great,” Peters said of the accomplishments, emphasizing how milestones are important to the club’s development.
Martin’s achievement is particularly significant, as the previous record had stood since 1910. “We know how good he is with the boot,” Peters noted, recalling Martin’s performance in last year’s Grand Final where he missed only one kick. His consistency in crucial moments is a valuable asset for the team.
This victory serves not only as a strong start to Hull KR’s Challenge Cup title defense but also sets a positive tone for the season ahead. As the team looks to build on this momentum, the contributions of new players and the setting of club records will undoubtedly boost confidence and camaraderie within the squad.
