Mbappé Embraces No. 10 Jersey, Elevates Real Madrid Ambitions
Kylian Mbappé has stepped up his game at Real Madrid since taking on the iconic No. 10 jersey, a shift that not only enhances his personal brand but also impacts the club’s commercial success. Following his request in July to inherit the number worn by Luka Modric, club president Florentino Pérez and Adidas executives recognized the potential for significant marketing gains. However, coach Xabi Alonso offered a more measured response, emphasizing that the number carries responsibilities beyond mere commercial appeal.
Alonso reminded Mbappé that Modric had upheld the dignity of the No. 10 shirt for seven years through his exemplary performances and attitude. The coach implicitly challenged Mbappé to uphold these standards. The French forward’s initial response has been impressive, scoring three goals in his first two matches, including a brace in a 3-0 victory against Oviedo on March 10, 2024. This performance builds on a stellar season where he netted 44 goals, marking him as the most prolific debutant in Madrid’s history.
The commercial side of Mbappé’s transition has also yielded immediate results. According to a report by Fermín de la Calle in Diario Sport, 345,000 No. 10 shirts were sold shortly after his announcement, generating millions for Adidas and reinforcing Real Madrid’s status as a valuable partner for the company.
After the match against Oviedo, Alonso expressed satisfaction with Mbappé’s performance and his desire for further achievement. “Kylian wants more,” he said. “If his choice of the No. 10 helps all that happen, fantastic.” Mbappé echoed this sentiment, stating, “The No. 10 carries huge importance at this club, but I think the No. 9 did, too. I’m feeling great right now, but the most important thing is helping my team offensively and defensively.”
As usual, Mbappé’s reputation as a goal-scorer is well-established. Yet, previous coaches have sought to enhance his all-around game by encouraging a more defensive role. Alonso noted the significance of Mbappé’s tracking back and his willingness to engage in defensive duties. While his performances have not transformed him into a complete player overnight, certain aspects of his play have begun to reflect a more rounded approach.
During the match, he demonstrated his commitment by tracking back to make an interception, sparking a dangerous counterattack. Additionally, when teammate Vinícius Júnior displayed frustration after being benched, Mbappé intervened, embracing him to diffuse the situation and celebrate the assist that led to his second goal.
Off the pitch, Mbappé showcased his character by engaging with fans. At halftime, he sought out a young supporter and gifted him his cherished No. 10 shirt, a gesture that will surely resonate with the young fan for years. Furthermore, after the game, he made a point to offer his discarded shirt to Ghanaian player Joseph Paintsil, who had expressed disappointment at not receiving a jersey swap.
These actions, while not necessarily indicative of a champion’s mentality, reflect Mbappé’s character and his commitment to the team. Alonso remarked on the infectious nature of Mbappé’s desire to excel, adding, “You can see Kylian’s on form, and his behavior and desire to excel is infectious for the rest of the team.”
As competition for starting positions intensifies, new players are emerging under Alonso’s management. Notably, Franco Mastuantono, who recently turned 18, made his full debut, while others like Rodrygo Goes continue to stake their claim for key roles. The dynamics within the team are shifting, and Mbappé’s leadership, both on and off the pitch, will likely play a crucial role in Real Madrid’s pursuit of further success.
In summary, Kylian Mbappé’s adoption of the No. 10 jersey signifies more than just a change in number. It represents a commitment to excellence and responsibility at Real Madrid. As he continues to perform at a high level, both on and off the pitch, his influence could prove pivotal in the club’s ambitions this season and beyond.
