Newbury Blues Rally for Success as Season Resumes in 2026
As the calendar turns to 2026, the Newbury Blues are experiencing a significant turnaround in their fortunes within the Regional 2 Severn league. After a rocky start to the season, the atmosphere at Monks Lane has shifted from cautious concern to optimism, thanks to a remarkable December where the team secured three consecutive victories. These wins, achieved against Witney, Cheltenham, and Old Centralians, have propelled the Blues up the league table and set the stage for a critical second half of the season.
James McAvoy, head coach of the Newbury Blues, reflected on the team’s journey thus far. “We are at a point on reflection and resolutions which give us an opportunity to come back to the values we set at the start of the season: resilience, accountability, and honesty,” he stated. McAvoy emphasized the importance of not over-coaching while ensuring that the team’s attacking and defensive principles remain secure. He aims for the players to support the ball carrier effectively and to execute skillful plays on the edges during attacks, while also establishing a solid defensive foundation.
The early months of the season were challenging for McAvoy’s squad, particularly during a difficult October. When asked about the recent winning streak’s implications for the team’s future, he noted, “Our recent form has a direct correlation with player availability and an increase in training numbers.” McAvoy highlighted the critical nature of player commitment in fostering ongoing improvement. “I am pleased that the group is beginning to embrace difficulty. Leaders have communicated the necessity of wanting to be involved in tough games, which is vital for our development.”
In previous discussions, McAvoy prioritized enhancing the team’s attacking capabilities. Although the recent victories indicate progress, he remains focused on further improvements. “In terms of attack, we still need to enhance our edge work and ensure the ball does the work while embedding fundamental habits in our next four-game block,” he said. McAvoy expressed confidence in the team’s potential, suggesting that a fourth-place finish in the league is attainable. “There are many factors contributing to that, but I would like us to consistently apply our key principles to achieve that outcome.”
The Newbury Blues will return to action on January 10, 2026, with a crucial home match against Thornbury. After suffering a heavy defeat in their previous encounter in October, McAvoy’s side will be eager to demonstrate that the “New Year Blues” are a transformed team ready to tackle the challenges ahead. As the season unfolds, the Blues aim to build on their recent successes and secure a strong finish in the league.
