Noren Soars to Co-Lead with Dramatic Eagle at Wentworth
Alex Noren delivered a stunning performance at the BMW PGA Championship, finishing the third round with an eagle on the 18th hole. This remarkable play propelled him into a tie for the lead at Wentworth, where he now shares the top spot with French golfer Adrien Saddier, both sitting at 15 under par.
Noren concluded his round with a score of 66, highlighted by a birdie-birdie-eagle finish. The Swede sank a challenging 17-foot putt on the final hole, capping off an impressive day on the course. His outstanding play follows his recent victory at the British Masters, solidifying his reputation as a formidable competitor.
Saddier’s ascent to the leaderboard was marked by a stellar performance that included eight birdies and a seven-under-par round of 65. His only misstep came with a bogey on the second hole.
Challengers Close Behind
Tyrrell Hatton, a member of the European Ryder Cup team, lurks closely behind the leaders, just two strokes off the pace at 13 under par. Hatton’s flawless round of 64 featured eight birdies, earning him the best score of the day.
Viktor Hovland, also preparing for the upcoming Ryder Cup, stands fourth at 12 under after a mixed round of 71. Initially poised to challenge for the lead, Hovland began strong with three birdies in his first four holes but faced difficulties later on, including consecutive bogeys before the turn and a seven on the 12th. He managed to recover somewhat with a birdie on the final hole.
South Africa’s Darren Fichardt is another contender, currently at 11 under, while Ludvig Aberg and Matt Fitzpatrick are part of a six-player group, all at 10 under.
The challenges of the course became apparent as later starters struggled with difficult conditions. Hideki Matsuyama, who led after the second round, fell back significantly after a disappointing four-over-par 76, dropping him to a tie for 20th at 18 under. Justin Rose, who was just one stroke behind Matsuyama at the halfway mark, also faltered, finishing with a 76 that included five bogeys and a double, landing him at seven under.
As the final round approaches, the stage is set for a thrilling conclusion at Wentworth, with Noren and Saddier eager to maintain their momentum and secure victory in this prestigious tournament.
