Petar Ivanović from Podgorica has been honored with the prestigious Iskra Award for his remarkable act of bravery in saving a woman’s life from the swollen Moraca River. During a ceremony held on October 20, 2023, at the Royal Theatre “Zetski dom” in Cetinje, Ivanović humbly stated that he merely did what anyone would do in a similar situation. His courageous deed serves as a powerful reminder that true heroes exist among us.

The Iskra Award, organized for the seventeenth time by the Fund for Active Citizenship (fAKT), recognizes individuals, companies, and organizations that have made significant contributions to their communities over the past year. This year, two main awards and seven special recognitions were presented, highlighting the diverse ways in which philanthropy can foster solidarity and inspire social change.

In addition to Ivanović’s award, the Montenegro Commercial Bank received recognition for its national-level contributions to corporate philanthropy. Throughout 2023, the bank supported numerous projects across various sectors, including culture, sports, education, health, social inclusion, and environmental protection, demonstrating a strong commitment through its employee Volunteer Club.

The ceremony also honored Milorad Mido Drekalović with a lifetime achievement award. Drekalović has long been a symbol of humanity and the Red Cross in Nikšić, dedicating decades to selflessly assisting refugees, the socially vulnerable, and individuals with disabilities. His enduring legacy of compassion continues to inspire those around him.

Special recognition for community service was awarded to the family of Milodarka and Mikan Zorić from Nikšić, who have been engaged in humanitarian efforts for several decades. Their family’s commitment to voluntary blood donation and various community support initiatives exemplifies the impact of collective action.

Environmental activist Aleksandar Dragićević was also acknowledged as a symbol of the fight for ecological justice in Montenegro. Through his continuous efforts to raise awareness of illegal exploitation, unauthorized construction, and environmental degradation, Dragićević has made significant strides in advocating for sustainable practices.

The Iskra Award also celebrated young philanthropist Đulija Kardović from Rožaje. Through numerous humanitarian, ecological, and civic initiatives, she has demonstrated how individuals can catalyze positive change within their communities.

The Red Cross of Montenegro received special recognition for its 150 years of humanitarian service. As the first Red Cross society in the Balkans, it has stood as a pillar of support for citizens during challenging times, thanks to its network of volunteers across 23 local units.

Lastly, the company Megapromet from Budva was honored for its ongoing support of humanitarian actions, including a substantial donation of €45,000 to the Budva Protection and Rescue Service, as well as contributions to the Institute for Children’s Diseases at the Clinical Centre of Montenegro.

The Iskra Award ceremony was held in collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce of Montenegro and the Ćano Koprivica Foundation, highlighting the importance of recognizing those who strive to make a positive impact in society. Anica-Maja Boljević, the executive director of fAKT, emphasized that the award serves as a reminder that philanthropy strengthens solidarity and drives social change, underscoring the shared responsibility for a more equitable society.
