Postecoglou Faces Fan Discontent After Nottingham Forest Defeat

Nottingham Forest manager Angé Postecoglou acknowledged the growing discontent among fans following a disappointing 3-2 defeat to Midtjylland in the Europa League at the City Ground. The loss marks a challenging start for Postecoglou, who is still seeking his first victory since taking charge.

The match unfolded dramatically, with Ousmane Diao scoring the opening goal for Midtjylland as he tapped into an empty net. However, the home crowd erupted when Dan Ndoye equalized shortly after. Midtjylland quickly regained the lead through Mads Bech, while Chris Wood had two goals disallowed for offside. The Danish side sealed their win when Valdemar Andreasen scored their third goal on a counterattack. Although Wood managed to convert a stoppage-time penalty, it was insufficient to quell the frustration of the home supporters, who chanted “sacked in the morning” directed at Postecoglou.

Postecoglou commented on the fan reaction, stating, “The fans are disappointed. They’re allowed to have their opinion on it and I heard their opinion.” He expressed a sense of resignation regarding the current climate in football, saying, “Nothing surprises me anymore in football.”

The defeat leaves Postecoglou with a record of four losses and two draws from his first six matches as Forest’s permanent manager, making him the first in the club’s history to start a tenure without a win in the opening six games for a century. Despite the pressure, Postecoglou remains optimistic about turning the situation around. He remarked, “Yes, I do believe things can turn… I really believe that we’re on the right track, and when we get through this period of uncertainty, we’ll be on a good path.”

He acknowledged the fans’ frustrations but emphasized that the only way to change opinions is through winning. “I can only change that by winning games of football,” he noted.

Midtjylland, on the other hand, celebrated their second consecutive win in the competition and currently sit second in their group. Coach Mike Tullberg expressed pride in his team’s performance against a Premier League side, highlighting the electric atmosphere of the match. “We played an incredible team from England and the guys did very well,” he said. “To be in this atmosphere was amazing. Really glad for us, a great win, and hope Forest get their goals for the season.”
