Rangers Suffer 2-0 Defeat to Roma, Remain Winless in Europa League
Rangers faced yet another setback in their Europa League campaign, suffering a 2-0 defeat at Ibrox against Italian side Roma on October 26, 2023. The loss leaves Rangers without a point in their group, deepening concerns over the team’s performance in Europe. Goals from Matias Soule and Lorenzo Pellegrini in the first half secured a comfortable victory for Roma, who appeared to control the match with relative ease.
The match began with Roma quickly establishing dominance. Soule opened the scoring in the 15th minute, converting a header from Brian Cristante. Pellegrini doubled the lead just before halftime, finishing a well-placed pass following a strong run from Dovbyk. Despite a brief resurgence from Rangers in the early stages of the second half, they struggled to create clear chances, illustrating a dismal run of form.
With this defeat, Rangers remain at the bottom of their Europa League group, now trailing the nearest qualifying spot by five points. They have lost all four of their group stage matches, conceding eight goals while scoring only once. The atmosphere at Ibrox was tense, as fans expressed their frustration through boos and banners directed at the club’s management.
Supporters have grown increasingly discontent with the leadership under sporting director Kevin Thelwell and CEO Patrick Stewart. Following the match, the sentiment among the crowd suggested a potential “mutiny” as they voiced their dissatisfaction with the team’s performance and management decisions.
In stark contrast, Roma celebrated a vital win that lifted their spirits after previous defeats to Lille and Viktoria Plzen. Head coach Gian Piero Gasperini praised his team’s composure and focus, noting that the victory was essential to revive their European ambitions. The win not only provided Roma with crucial points but also showcased the depth of their squad, with players stepping up in the absence of key figures.
As Rangers continue to search for answers, the prospect of turning their fortunes around seems daunting. The team must confront their challenges head-on, as they look to recover in both domestic and European competitions. With a record of seven consecutive European losses, the pressure mounts on the management and players alike to restore pride and performance on the pitch.
