Ranking the Top 12 Centre-Backs in the EFL Championship So Far
The EFL Championship has showcased numerous standout centre-backs during the current season, reflecting a mixture of experience and potential. As the league enters a two-week break due to the November international fixtures, players and managers are taking this time to evaluate their performances. Many clubs are either meeting or falling short of early-season expectations, which adds to the intrigue surrounding individual player performances.
In modern football, the role of a defender has evolved significantly. Today, centre-backs are expected not only to excel in defensive skills but also to possess strong ball-playing abilities that align with various tactical approaches employed by managers. This season, several players have distinguished themselves in the Championship, warranting recognition for their contributions at the heart of their team’s defence.
Top Performers in the Championship
Rob Atkinson of Bristol City leads the list, despite currently being sidelined with a hamstring injury. The 27-year-old made an impactful start to the season, with notable performances including a goal against Ipswich and an assist for Sinclair Armstrong against Birmingham City. Atkinson’s statistics remain impressive, ranking in the top 10 percent of Championship players for tackles and duels won.
Next is Ben Wilmot from Stoke City, who has played a pivotal role in the club’s strong defensive performance under manager Mark Robins. The 26-year-old has recorded 68 recoveries and 73 duels won, significantly contributing to Stoke’s status as the league’s best defence, conceding only 10 goals in the opening months of the season.
Charlie Hughes of Hull City has emerged as a key figure in their surprising push for a playoff spot. At just 22 years old, Hughes has shown maturity in defence, evidenced by his ability to win aerial battles and a stunning assist for Joe Gelhardt in a recent match against Portsmouth.
Charlton Athletic’s Lloyd Jones has built on his impressive League One form. The former Liverpool player has quickly adapted to Championship challenges, ranking third in clearances per 90 minutes and fourth in interceptions, which underscores his defensive reliability.
Dara O’Shea, the captain of Ipswich Town, has been instrumental in the team’s resurgence this season. His recent performances have included a goal against Middlesbrough, and O’Shea’s ability to win aerial duels and make recovery tackles has been crucial as Ipswich aims for promotion.
Defensive Excellence Continues
Jannik Vestergaard of Leicester City has provided stability amid a mixed start for the team. The Danish international’s composure under pressure and aerial prowess have proven vital in both defensive duties and contributing to attack, as he scored goals against Sheffield Wednesday and Swansea City.
Preston North End’s Jordan Storey has made significant contributions to his team’s defensive setup. The 28-year-old has tallied 22 interceptions this season, demonstrating his ability to dominate both ground and aerial duels, which has been key to the team’s improved form.
Tristan Crama has transitioned from right-back to centre-back for Millwall, showcasing adaptability and skill. His partnership with Jake Cooper has received praise, particularly for their intimidating presence during matches at The Den.
Birmingham City’s newly-appointed captain, Christoph Klarer, remains a standout performer this season. Having been considered the best defender in League One last year, Klarer’s strong physical presence and ability to start attacks from the back have kept him at the forefront of defensive statistics.
Finally, Dael Fry of Middlesbrough rounds out the top three. The 28-year-old has rebounded from injury setbacks to become a cornerstone for his team. Fry’s leadership and scoring ability, highlighted by his goals against Swansea City and Birmingham City, have made him a pivotal figure in Middlesbrough’s campaign.
As the Championship season progresses, these centre-backs exemplify the blend of skill and tactical awareness necessary for success in modern football. Their contributions not only enhance their respective teams’ performances but also elevate the overall quality of the league.
