Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim expressed confidence in his team’s potential for the remainder of the season despite a frustrating 1-1 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford on December 30, 2025. The match ended United’s turbulent year on a disappointing note, with Wolves, who had suffered 11 consecutive Premier League defeats, managing to secure a rare point.

Wolves entered the fixture at the bottom of the league table, having accumulated only two points from 18 matches. Their performance at Old Trafford marked a turning point, as Joshua Zirkzee opened the scoring with a deflected goal, but Ladislav Krejci equalised for Wolves, ensuring the game ended in a stalemate. This result came just three weeks after United convincingly defeated Wolves 4-1 at Molineux.

Despite the setback, Amorim remained optimistic. “I’m really confident,” he stated at the midpoint of the campaign. “We just need to recover all the players, and I’m really confident. I don’t know what is going to happen until the end of the season. Then we will make the resume of the season.” With United currently sitting in sixth place, just two points behind Liverpool, who hold the final Champions League spot, the stakes remain high.

Looking ahead to the new year, United will face their rivals Leeds United on January 7, 2026. Amorim indicated that he would exercise caution with player selections to avoid exacerbating existing injuries. The team has been notably affected by absences, with key players such as Bruno Fernandes, Bryan Mbeumo, and Mason Mount missing from the lineup.

Amorim’s tactical adjustments during the match against Wolves were notable. He substituted Zirkzee at half-time, opting for teenager Jack Fletcher, a move he described as “just tactical.” He explained, “We need to do what the game was asking… In the first half, we struggled a little bit to recover the ball, so I’m just looking not for their age and the experience. In this moment, I just look what I can do to win the game.”

The match also saw United revert to Amorim’s preferred three-man defence, a strategy that Wolves manager Rob Edwards anticipated. Edwards expressed pride in his players for securing a point, marking their first since he took charge. “It’s nice to take something from the game,” he remarked. “I do feel it’s the least we deserve. It’s progress. Overall, it was a really good performance.”

Edwards acknowledged the challenge presented by the atmosphere at Old Trafford, stating, “We talked about that at half-time. We said to the lads… how difficult it is to play in front of an unhappy crowd.” He recognised the fans’ frustrations but noted that his team created several chances and justified their efforts on the pitch.

As both teams prepare for upcoming matches—United against Leeds and Wolves facing fellow strugglers West Ham United—the focus for Amorim and Edwards lies in building momentum and securing vital points in the second half of the season.
