The San Francisco 49ers have confirmed that wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has played his last snap with the team. General manager John Lynch made the announcement during a news conference on Wednesday, indicating that a decision on Aiyuk’s future is forthcoming. The acknowledgment marks the culmination of a turbulent period marked by contractual disputes and communication breakdowns.

Lynch stated, “I think it’s safe to say that he’s played his last snap with the Niners. It’s unfortunate. A situation that just went awry.” He expressed a desire to reflect on what could have been done differently but acknowledged that sometimes relationships simply do not work out. The inevitable move to part ways with Aiyuk could involve either a release or, less likely, a trade, which will be determined in “due time.”

Aiyuk’s tenure with the 49ers began with promise but became increasingly complicated. After a protracted contract negotiation in the summer of 2024, he signed a four-year extension worth $120 million, with $76 million guaranteed. However, any hopes for a smooth partnership quickly faded after a public incident in September 2024, when Aiyuk and head coach Kyle Shanahan had an awkward exchange due to Aiyuk wearing red shorts while the rest of the team adhered to the required black attire.

On the field, Aiyuk struggled to make an impact, averaging only 58.5 receiving yards per game and failing to score a touchdown in the first six games of the 2024 season. His performance took a further hit when he sustained significant injuries, tearing his ACL, MCL, and meniscus in his right knee on October 20, 2024, which ended his season prematurely.

The 49ers had considered trading Aiyuk in the offseason, but his injury diminished any potential return. By April 1, 2025, his $24.935 million roster bonus for 2026 became guaranteed, complicating the team’s financial outlook. Tensions escalated when Aiyuk missed multiple rehabilitation sessions, ultimately leading to the voiding of approximately $27 million in guarantees from his contract.

Shanahan remarked on November 22, 2025, that he had never encountered a situation where a player’s contract was voided in his over twenty years of coaching. Subsequently, Aiyuk ceased communication with team officials, prompting Shanahan to comment, “I’d say it officially stopped for me when the last time I tried to get a hold of him and couldn’t.”

On December 13, 2025, the 49ers placed Aiyuk on the reserve/left team list, typically reserved for players who intend to retire or step away from the game temporarily. This designation ensures that Aiyuk will not participate in the upcoming 2026 season.

As the 49ers consider their next steps, they face significant financial implications. If they release Aiyuk during the offseason, they will incur nearly $30 million in dead money against the salary cap. Alternatively, designating him as a post-June 1 release could split this burden into $13.325 million in 2026 and $21.247 million in 2027. These figures would also apply in the event of a trade, which cannot be treated as a post-June 1 transaction.

Lynch emphasized that moving on from Aiyuk will enhance the team’s salary cap flexibility, especially with impending decisions regarding other players, such as unrestricted free agent Jauan Jennings and Ricky Pearsall, who faced injury challenges in 2025.

When asked about the lack of communication from Aiyuk, Lynch admitted, “I wish I knew… can’t help you there.” Shanahan echoed this uncertainty, stating, “You try as hard as you can to fix something that you don’t understand, but it’s not like we understand it very well still.” Ultimately, the 49ers are prepared to move forward, focusing on building a competitive team while reflecting on the lessons learned from Aiyuk’s departure.
