St Johnstone Triumphs 4-0 Over Morton, Valakari Applauds Team Effort
St Johnstone FC demonstrated a commanding performance on October 7, 2023, securing a decisive 4-0 victory against Morton at Cappielow. Head coach Simo Valakari lauded his players for their response to their first league defeat of the season, which had followed two consecutive draws and a disappointing loss to Arbroath. The win not only reflected St Johnstone’s resilience but also reinstated their position at the top of the Championship table, now three points ahead of Partick Thistle.
The match unfolded with remarkable intensity as St Johnstone made their intentions clear from the outset. Within the first five minutes, Cheick Diabate opened the scoring with a powerful header from a corner taken by Jamie Gullan. Gullan quickly added to the tally, skillfully converting a low shot after dispossessing ex-teammate Cammy MacPherson. By the 26th minute, Josh McPake extended the lead, cutting inside to fire a shot into the far corner, showcasing the team’s attacking prowess.
Gullan completed a first-half brace shortly after, netting his second goal of the match with a precise shot from the edge of the box. This strong offensive display left Morton struggling to respond effectively.
Valakari expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, stating, “I couldn’t have asked more from the result or the performance. Maybe it was even more meaningful after our first defeat last Saturday – how we would react. Today was exam day.” He emphasized the importance of the players’ mental state and their ability to turn talk into action.
Defensively, St Johnstone showed significant improvement compared to their previous outing. Valakari highlighted the solid defensive play as a foundation for the team’s attacking success: “Last week we did not defend well, but today we were so solid.” The team successfully restricted Morton’s opportunities, ensuring they maintained control throughout the match.
The second half saw St Johnstone create additional chances to extend their lead, with notable opportunities including a free header from Morgan Boyes. Despite the missed chances, the primary focus remained on preventing Morton from building any momentum. The visitors effectively managed the game, culminating in their most comfortable away win of the season.
This victory marks a significant turnaround for St Johnstone, reaffirming their competitive edge in the league. Valakari’s men are now poised to capitalize on their winning momentum as they aim to maintain their lead in the Championship. As the season progresses, the team will look to build on this performance and continue their pursuit of championship glory.
