Storm Threatens Schedule at Brazilian Grand Prix This Weekend

A significant storm is forecast to impact the Interlagos Formula 1 circuit in Sao Paulo, potentially affecting the schedule for the upcoming Sao Paulo Grand Prix. The National Institute of Meteorology has issued an orange alert, indicating heavy rain and strong winds expected on Saturday, November 11, 2023. This inclement weather poses challenges for the sprint race scheduled for 11 a.m. local time, followed by qualifying for Sunday’s grand prix at 3 p.m. local time.

According to the FIA, the worst of the weather is anticipated to hit the circuit between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. on Saturday. A representative noted that this estimate is subject to change as conditions evolve overnight. Should there be a delay to the sprint race, it could consequently affect the timing of the qualifying session.

With sunset occurring at 6:30 p.m. in Sao Paulo, the available window to adjust the schedule is limited. The unpredictable weather at Brazil’s race has historically resulted in dramatic and memorable events. Last year, for instance, Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing showcased an extraordinary performance, moving from 17th to victory in torrential rain, a situation that caught many drivers off guard.

The impending storm raises further concerns beyond scheduling. The paddock curfew is set to end at 6:30 a.m., coinciding with the forecasted peak of the storm as team personnel arrive to prepare their cars. Teams have been advised to keep their garages closed outside of any on-track activities to mitigate the impact of the adverse weather conditions.

The FIA will closely monitor the weather throughout the day. If significant disruptions occur, qualifying may be rescheduled to Sunday, a scenario last observed during the 2019 Japanese Grand Prix when a typhoon led to the cancellation of Saturday’s activities. Should qualifying for the main race be unable to proceed as planned, Formula 1 regulations state that the starting grid would then be determined by current championship standings.
