Thedeviluno Dominates River Don Hurdle, Eyes Cheltenham Glory

Thedeviluno showcased his potential as a strong candidate for the Cheltenham Festival with a decisive victory in the Virgin Bet Daily Extra Places River Don Novices’ Hurdle at Doncaster on March 2, 2024. The gelding, trained by Paul Nolan, entered the race as a 15-2 chance after previously finishing second to Willie Mullins’s Doctor Steinberg in a Grade Two event at Navan.

In what was anticipated to be a competitive Grade Two race, Sean O’Keeffe executed a careful strategy, keeping Thedeviluno relaxed and on the bridle for as long as possible. The horse appeared to be in excellent form, demonstrating remarkable stamina throughout the race. The only serious competition came from Ruth Jefferson’s Country Code, who at one point was separated from Thedeviluno by the width of the track.

As the race progressed and the two horses converged, Thedeviluno surged ahead, ultimately winning by a comfortable five lengths. Following this performance, bookmakers Paddy Power adjusted Thedeviluno’s odds for the Albert Bartlett to 14-1 from 33-1, reflecting increased confidence in his capabilities.

Nolan praised O’Keeffe’s performance, stating, “Sean was super-cool on him. When they jumped off and went a good gallop in that ground, I thought they had to ease off at some stage.” He noted that O’Keeffe was aware of the competition but chose to wait before fully urging Thedeviluno forward.

Reflecting on the previous race at Navan, Nolan expressed his disappointment but also optimism about Thedeviluno’s future. He mentioned the horse who finished behind Thedeviluno that day, Skylight Hussle, stating, “The horse he beat the first day has won a Grade One, so hopefully all roads lead to the Albert Bartlett now.”

Nolan’s history with the Albert Bartlett adds an additional layer of hope for Thedeviluno. He recalled his experience with Latest Exhibition, who narrowly lost to Monkfish in 2020 but went on to secure a Grade One victory. “If this fella is half as good, we’ll be happy,” he concluded.

As the racing community looks ahead to the Cheltenham Festival, Thedeviluno’s impressive performance at Doncaster has set expectations high for his upcoming endeavors. With a mix of strategic riding and a powerful display of stamina, he has firmly positioned himself as a horse to watch in the coming months.
