Wales Co-Captain Kate Williams Expresses Solidarity with Scotland’s Contract Struggles
The lead-up to the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 has been overshadowed by contract uncertainties facing the Scotland rugby team. Wales co-captain Kate Williams has voiced her sympathy for the Scottish players who are grappling with the prospect of being left without professional contracts after the tournament concludes in October.
More than half of Scotland’s squad reportedly fear their professional futures are in jeopardy. According to a source within the team, many players are experiencing significant mental and emotional distress due to the uncertainty surrounding their contracts. This situation echoes the turmoil faced by the Welsh team last year, when they were issued ultimatums and faced the possibility of withdrawal from the World Cup amid stalled contract negotiations. In the aftermath, the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) issued an apology for its handling of the situation.
Challenges and Competitive Spirit
“I wouldn’t wish what we went through on any other team,” said Williams, reflecting on the struggles her team faced. Scotland is set to face Wales in their opening match of Pool B on August 23, 2025, at the Salford Community Stadium. This match is particularly crucial, with implications for which teams advance to the quarter-finals. Canada is anticipated to lead the group, while both Scotland and Wales are expected to secure victories over Fiji.
The timing of Scotland’s contract issues has not gone unnoticed. “I think it’s really poor timing for them, that they’re going through this now,” Williams commented. She noted that Wales faced similar issues prior to the WXV2 tournament, allowing them to focus more on the World Cup preparation without the immediate pressure of unresolved contracts.
Despite the shared challenges, Williams emphasized that there would be no room for sympathy when the match kicks off. “We are here to play rugby and we’re here to win that Test match,” she stated firmly. “We know how important it is, so it’s just going to be who’s better on the day.” As the teams prepare to clash, the focus will undoubtedly remain on the competitive spirit and performance on the field, overshadowing the off-pitch issues that have affected both squads.
