West Belfast GAA Club Secures Extension Despite Local Objections
A Gaelic Athletic Club in West Belfast has received approval for a significant extension to its facilities, despite facing opposition from local residents. St Teresa’s GAC, located at Glen Road Heights, will expand its clubhouse to include an indoor sports hall, changing rooms, a fitness suite, and a new pitch.
The Belfast City Council Planning Committee unanimously approved the application during its February 2024 meeting. This decision includes relocating a grass pitch and constructing a new 3G training pitch equipped with integrated ball walls. Additionally, plans feature a new building designated for club storage and a match day shop. Site improvements will also encompass enhanced parking, fencing, catch nets, floodlighting, dugouts, and new pathways.
Concerns about the project were raised by local residents, who submitted 14 letters of objection. Many expressed that the design was “out of character for a residential area” and anticipated issues related to floodlighting, noise, traffic, and emergency vehicle access. Objectors highlighted potential health risks for children due to increased air pollution, alongside concerns for local wildlife and biodiversity, as well as the loss of green space and scenic views.
The planning report prepared by council officers noted that statutory consultees did not voice any objections. However, final comments from Shared Environmental Services and the DfI Rivers Agency were still pending at the time of approval. The report outlined that the proposal seeks to formalize the existing car parking area and add a 3G training pitch adjacent to it, which will take up part of an existing sports pitch.
The report acknowledged a net loss of approximately 2600 square meters of open space—about seven percent of the overall site. Despite this reduction, it asserted that the predominant purpose of the area remains recreational. The extended facilities are expected to complement the current recreational use and align with existing land use policies.
While objectors claimed the extension would obstruct views of the nearby landscape, the council concluded that the proposed pitches would have a negligible visual impact. The extension’s design and scale were deemed acceptable for a sports facility, and it was stated that the new structure would not present greater visual disturbances compared to the existing clubhouse.
The report emphasized that the loss of open space would not detrimentally affect the overall green infrastructure, asserting that surrounding green areas would mitigate any negative consequences. It also indicated that there would be minimal implications for sustainable drainage systems due to the extensive areas of grassed open space around the site.
The approval of this project illustrates the ongoing balance between community recreational needs and local concerns regarding development. As the St Teresa’s GAC prepares for its expansion, the club aims to enhance its facilities while addressing the perspectives of local residents.
