At least three individuals lost their lives and nearly two dozen others sustained injuries following a fire that engulfed a temporary lodging facility for workers in Budakeszi, a suburb located approximately eight kilometers west of Budapest. The incident occurred early on the morning of March 15, 2024, as firefighters from Hungary’s National Directorate General for Disaster Management responded to the emergency.

The fire broke out in a two-storey building, prompting an extensive emergency response. More than 40 paramedics and 18 emergency vehicles were deployed to the scene. Firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze, which had caused significant damage, and successfully rescued several survivors along with three gas cylinders from the wreckage.

Tragically, the bodies of two men and one woman were discovered under the collapsed roof of the building, according to a spokesperson for the disaster management authority. The circumstances surrounding the fire have prompted an investigation, as authorities suspect an explosion in one of the rooms may have initiated the blaze.

Investigation and Safety Concerns

During a news conference, a representative from the Pest County police headquarters revealed that several irregularities were identified in the building’s safety protocols. Notably, the use of gas within the facility was found to be non-compliant with existing regulations. As a result, a criminal investigation has been launched to determine the cause and circumstances of the fire.

In the aftermath of the incident, paramedics treated a total of 22 individuals for various injuries, with four of those injuries classified as life-threatening. The injured parties were transported to eight different hospitals in Budapest for further medical care.

This tragic incident has raised serious questions about the safety standards of temporary accommodations for workers in the region. Authorities are expected to conduct rigorous inspections across similar facilities to prevent future tragedies.
