EPL Relegation Battle Heats Up as Teams Face Tough Challenges
The English Premier League (EPL) is entering a critical phase as the relegation battle intensifies, with teams like Wolverhampton Wanderers and Burnley facing dire prospects for the remainder of the season. As of January 2026, both clubs are grappling with the real threat of relegation, which could have significant financial ramifications due to the substantial revenue losses associated with dropping down to the Championship.
The current odds reflect a bleak outlook for Wolves and Burnley. With odds of approximately 1/20, Burnley has been deemed highly likely to be relegated, while Wolves’ situation is even more precarious, indicated by odds of 1/1000. After managing to secure only three points from their first 19 matches, Wolves are in serious danger of breaking the record for the fewest points in a Premier League season, a record set by Derby County during the 2007/08 season, which finished with just 11 points.
As the season progresses, it is still mathematically possible for both clubs to avoid relegation. However, bookmakers are identifying other teams such as West Ham United, Nottingham Forest, Leeds United, and Bournemouth as potential candidates to fill the final relegation spot. West Ham’s season has been particularly troubled; their attempts to secure Manchester City’s Nathan Ake for reinforcement have not materialized, adding to their struggles in January.
Nottingham Forest, who returned to the Premier League with high expectations, have found the current season challenging. After a successful campaign last year that included a place in the Europa League, they are now hovering just above the relegation zone. The club has seen a tumultuous managerial transition, starting with Nuno Espirito Santo, followed by Ange Postecoglou, who was dismissed after only eight matches. Sean Dyche has since stepped in with hopes of stabilizing the team.
Leeds United, enjoying a decent league position thanks largely to the impressive form of striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, is also looking to distance itself from the relegation conversation. Meanwhile, Bournemouth has managed to establish a small buffer from the drop zone, although the potential departure of star player Antoine Semenyo to Manchester City could significantly impact their performance if it occurs.
The EPL’s unique structure, where the top teams often secure European competition spots, contrasts sharply with the high stakes of the relegation battle. For clubs at the bottom, the fight for survival not only represents a challenge on the pitch but also poses a critical threat to their financial stability. As the season unfolds, fans and analysts alike will be closely watching how this gripping narrative develops in the coming months.
