FBI Director Kash Patel Defends Olympic Trip Amid Criticism

FBI Director Kash Patel is facing backlash following his trip to the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy, which has raised questions about the use of government resources. Patel traveled on an FBI Gulfstream jet, departing on February 19, 2026. The trip has been scrutinized due to its overlap with his public enthusiasm for ice hockey and previous statements regarding the appropriate use of federal funds.

The situation intensified after a live broadcast on Instagram by Team USA captain Dylan Larkin, which captured Patel in the locker room following the men’s ice hockey gold medal victory on February 22. This footage contrasted sharply with prior assertions from the FBI, which characterized the trip as focused on Olympic security briefings and meetings with international diplomats.

The operational cost of the FBI Gulfstream is estimated at £3,850 ($5,000) per flight hour, leading to an approximate total expense of £58,000 ($75,000) for the duration of the Milan trip. Federal regulations mandate that the Director utilize government aircraft to maintain secure communications. However, he is also required to reimburse the government for any portion of the journey deemed personal.

FBI spokesperson Ben Williamson stated that the trip was not personal in nature. He explained that Patel had been invited months prior to assess the Bureau’s involvement in ensuring Olympic security. The itinerary reportedly included a briefing at the US consulate and meetings with US Ambassador to Italy Tilman Fertitta. Williamson emphasized the FBI’s ongoing commitment to managing security threats at international events.

The Instagram footage depicted a different side of Patel’s activities, showing him celebrating with the team, wearing a gold medal, and consuming beer. Critics have pointed out that this celebratory atmosphere contradicts the Bureau’s portrayal of a serious, security-focused mission. The juxtaposition of the festivities in Milan against ongoing domestic security issues has drawn considerable criticism from various quarters.

Xochitl Hinojosa, a senior strategist at CNN, highlighted the disparity between Patel’s celebratory presence and pressing national security concerns, including a threat at the president’s Mar-a-Lago residence and ongoing cartel violence against Americans in Mexico. Hinojosa’s comments reflect a growing sentiment that Patel’s priorities may not align with pressing national issues.

Federal ethics rules require a clear distinction between official and personal travel. If any part of the trip is deemed personal, officials must disclose information about non-official passengers. Patel mentioned that he was invited into the locker room by “friends” on the team but maintained that this did not interfere with his official responsibilities in Italy. The FBI has confirmed that Patel will reimburse the government for any personal travel costs, in accordance with standard federal travel regulations.

Congressional oversight committees have previously sought records related to Patel’s travel, focusing on ensuring taxpayer funds are exclusively allocated for mission-related activities. The FBI continues to assert that all ethical guidelines regarding the Director’s travel arrangements and security needs are being adhered to.

The final travel logs will undergo review to ascertain the balance between Patel’s official duties and his attendance at Olympic events. As scrutiny continues, the implications of Patel’s trip may extend beyond personal accountability, raising broader questions about the use of public resources in the context of government officials’ travel.
