Inmates at HMP Berwyn Refurbish Bicycles for Charity Support

Inmates at HMP Berwyn are participating in a new rehabilitation initiative by refurbishing bicycles to generate funds for Nightingale House Hospice. This collaborative project, in partnership with FCC Environment and Wrexham Council, enables prisoners to repair donated bikes, which are then sold at the Bryn Lane Reuse Shop. All proceeds from these sales will directly support the hospice’s efforts to provide care for individuals with life-limiting illnesses.

The initiative is financed through the Wrexham Shared Prosperity Fund, which aims to enhance community well-being. Inmates involved in the project receive accredited training in bicycle maintenance, equipping them with valuable skills for their future. Materials necessary for the refurbishments are provided by Wrexham Council, with additional support from FCC Environment.

Impact on Community and Rehabilitation

Beyond fundraising, the program serves several purposes. It promotes environmental sustainability by reusing bicycles, offers local residents access to affordable transportation options, and aids in the rehabilitation of inmates by providing meaningful work.
