Kristi Noem Proposes Election Security Measures Ahead of Midterms
Kristi Noem, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), emphasized her commitment to ensuring that elections are conducted securely and that the “right people” are voting. Speaking at a press conference on October 6, 2023, in Arizona, Noem underscored the DHS’s role in election security, calling it a critical responsibility.
During her remarks, Noem stated, “Elections is another one of those critical infrastructure responsibilities that I have as well.” She highlighted the importance of maintaining public trust in the electoral process, asserting that proactive measures are necessary to ensure the integrity of elections. “We have to make sure that we have the right people voting, electing the right leaders to lead this country,” she added.
Noem’s comments come amid ongoing discussions around election integrity, particularly in a state that has been a focal point for allegations of electoral fraud. She claimed authority to identify vulnerabilities within the election system and implement mitigation strategies to ensure elections are “run correctly” at both state and national levels.
The reaction to Noem’s statements was swift and critical. Chuck Schumer, Senate Minority Leader, responded by suggesting that Noem’s perspective reflects a troubling view of democracy, where leaders choose their voters rather than the other way around. Additionally, the Democratic organization, Homeland Dems, expressed concern, stating, “DHS talking about the ‘right people’ voting should alarm every American.”
Discontent among critics intensified with a statement from the group Republicans Against Trump, which remarked on Noem’s comments, saying they were “saying the quiet part out loud.”
The backdrop to Noem’s remarks includes the recent passage of the SAVE America Act in the House, a bill mandating proof of U.S. citizenship for federal election registration through photo identification. This legislation, if signed into law, would require states to remove non-citizens from electoral rolls. However, it still faces uncertainty in the Senate, where some Republican members have indicated potential opposition.
In a related development, former President Donald Trump took to social media, suggesting he would enforce voter identification requirements through an Executive Order, stating, “There will be Voter I.D. for the Midterm Elections, whether approved by Congress or not!” Critics have raised alarms about the implications of such a move, fearing it could lead to disenfranchisement of legitimate voters over documentation issues.
Noem dismissed concerns about potential voter suppression, attributing criticisms of the SAVE America Act to “baseless speculation from the radical left.” She argued that the left’s opposition stems from a desire to allow illegal immigration to influence elections.
Amid this controversy, a report by The Wall Street Journal described a climate of “constant chaos” within the DHS under Noem’s leadership. Sources cited in the report criticized her management style, suggesting that she has prioritized personal visibility over effective governance. This includes efforts to stage high-profile immigration crackdowns while sidelining dissenting voices within the department.
The report also noted that President Trump has considered calls to dismiss Noem and her advisor, Corey Lewandowski, due to dissatisfaction with their leadership. Although he has not acted on this yet, discontent over their management continues to simmer.
As the midterm elections approach, the debate over election integrity and security is expected to intensify, with Noem’s comments adding fuel to an already charged political landscape.
