Memorial Tournament Honoring Andrija Delibašić Scheduled for March 25
Memories of the legendary Montenegrin striker Andrija Delibašić continue to resonate within the football community following his passing on March 19, 2025, at the age of 44. In his honor, his former clubs Sutjeska, Partizan, and Budućnost are organizing a memorial tournament on March 25 at 18:00 near the Bistrica River.
Born in Nikšić, Delibašić made a significant impact on football, having played for several teams across multiple countries. He is particularly remembered for scoring a historic equalizer against England, leading to a 2:2 draw during a pivotal match in Podgorica. His career spanned clubs in Montenegro, Serbia, Portugal, Greece, Spain, Thailand, and back to Montenegro, showcasing his talent and love for the sport.
Delibašić played for notable teams including Benfica, Braga, AEK, RCD Mallorca, and Real Sociedad. However, he held a special connection to Sutjeska, Partizan, and Budućnost, which he considered his home clubs. The tournament, conceived by former Budućnost coach Ivan Brnović, will feature matches between these three teams, each playing against one another for 45 minutes.
At a press conference held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Podgorica, representatives from the participating clubs expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to honor Delibašić’s legacy. Danko Lazović, vice president of Partizan and a close friend of Delibašić, shared his emotions regarding the tournament.
“Andrija was not just a teammate; he was family. It is an honor for me to represent Partizan and be part of this organization. His absence is deeply felt, but we must celebrate his life and the mark he left on our club,” Lazović said, visibly emotional.
The tournament is set to begin in Nikšić, where Delibašić took his first steps in football. The plan is to hold the next edition in Belgrade, where he gained recognition, and subsequently in Podgorica, where he served as a coach and sporting director. Lazović emphasized the importance of maintaining respect during the tournament, ensuring it reflects the values and character that Delibašić embodied throughout his career.
“The aim is to create a lasting tradition that not only commemorates Andrija but also serves as an example for future generations,” stated Jovan Papović, a member of Sutjeska’s management. He highlighted Delibašić’s journey as a testament to hard work, talent, and integrity in sports.
After retiring as a player, Delibašić transitioned into coaching, leading Mornar and later contributing to Budućnost as an assistant coach and sporting director. His efforts played a significant role in securing trophies for the club.
Predrag Kažić, executive director of Budućnost, expressed his pride in being part of this initiative. “We are not here to mourn; we are here to celebrate a life that continues to inspire. Andrija’s legacy lives on in our club and in the hearts of those who knew him,” he remarked.
Delibašić’s son, Andrej Delibašić, who is following in his father’s footsteps in football, also expressed his gratitude for the memorial tournament. “I want to thank everyone involved in organizing this event. It means a lot to my family and me to keep my father’s memory alive. I hope this becomes an annual tradition,” he said.
The first memorial tournament in honor of Andrija Delibašić promises to be a heartfelt tribute to a remarkable player and person, fostering connections among fans, players, and future generations.
