Montenegro is poised to make history on December 28, 2023, when it launches its first national satellite, “Luča.” This landmark event will position Montenegro as the first country in the Western Balkans to operate its own satellite, marking a significant milestone in the region’s technological advancement. The satellite is set to be launched from the Vostochny Cosmodrome in Russia aboard a Soyuz rocket.

Perović highlighted that the satellite also includes a camera and communication devices, broadening its research and educational capabilities. He acknowledged the challenges faced during the project, particularly the heavy burden of responsibility for every aspect, from technical decisions to international coordination. “In space projects, there is no room for mistakes,” he emphasized, adding that every decision must meet the highest standards.

Launch Details and Future Prospects

The launch is scheduled for 14:18 CET (22:18 local time), taking place under the cover of night. “Luča” will be part of a secondary payload, sharing space with several international satellites, including the Emirati-Kuwaiti satellite QMR-KWT 2 and the Qatari TriSat-3.

The satellite is expected to have a lifespan of approximately three years, with full communication anticipated to be established within ten to fifteen days post-launch. Montenegro Space Research has indicated that this project is just the beginning, as they aim to establish a functional infrastructure for the country’s space industry within four years, including educational programs for students and collaborations with renowned institutions like the University of Montenegro and Sorbonne.

The launch of “Luča” represents a historic moment for Montenegro and lays the groundwork for future projects, including plans to develop the country’s first rocket.
