Reckless Driver Convicted After Using Car to Injure Man

A man has been convicted of attempted murder after deliberately using his car to strike another individual in Wolverhampton. The incident occurred on July 2, 2023, when 46-year-old Melvin Winters and his girlfriend, Josie James, engaged in an argument with their victim before the violent act took place.

Emergency services were alerted to a potentially fatal collision on Pope Road in The Scotlands at approximately 14:20. Upon arrival, paramedics found a 42-year-old man suffering from serious injuries to his legs, ribs, and shoulder. He was subsequently transported to a hospital, where he continues to recover from the incident.

Following the collision, authorities conducted a swift investigation. They identified that the victim had been struck by a black Vauxhall Insignia, which was later located abandoned in nearby Masefield Mews around 15:05 on the same day. Forensic examinations were conducted on the vehicle to gather crucial evidence.

CCTV footage revealed the sequence of events leading up to the assault. Winters and James had met the victim earlier that day, where an argument ensued. As the victim attempted to walk away, Winters drove his car into him, knocking him to the ground. In a further act of aggression, Winters circled back and struck the victim a second time while he lay injured.

While the victim was incapacitated, James exited the vehicle and stole a gold chain from him, displaying a complete disregard for his well-being. The couple then fled the scene, leaving the victim seriously hurt.

Officers quickly identified and located Winters and James, arresting them at separate addresses on July 5. Both defendants denied charges of attempted murder and robbery during the trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court. However, on December 18, they were found guilty on all counts.

DC Reece Markham from the Major Crime Unit expressed outrage at the actions of the pair. He stated, “Whatever the reason for the argument, using a car as a weapon to injure someone is horrendous and could have resulted in the victim losing their life. For the passenger of the car to have seen what happened and then get out to rob the victim as he lay on the ground, without offering him any help, is appalling.”

The couple, both from Bushbury, are scheduled to be sentenced on February 10, 2024. Their conviction highlights the severe consequences of reckless behavior and the importance of accountability in violent crimes.
