71-Year-Old Man Dies After Bull Attack at Carnaval del Toro
A tragic incident occurred during the Carnaval del Toro festival in Ciudad Rodrigo, Spain, resulting in the death of a 71-year-old man. The victim, identified as Eustaquio Martín, succumbed to injuries sustained from a bull goring on the night of February 14, 2024.
Martín was participating in the festival, which is renowned for its bullfighting events, when the incident took place around 01:00 local time. Reports indicate that he was in the bullring when a bull charged at him, causing severe injuries. According to Dr. Enrique Crespo, who treated Martín, the goring resulted in “uncontrollable and catastrophic” bleeding. The bull pierced the upper part of Martín’s ribcage, leaving his heart partially destroyed and damaging one of his lungs.
Despite the immediate medical attention he received and his transport to a local hospital, Martín’s injuries proved fatal. His death marks a significant and somber moment for the community, as it is the first death at the Carnaval del Toro in four decades. The last recorded death occurred in 1986, involving a man named Miguel Ángel Garzón.
Following the news of Martín’s death, the mayor of Ciudad Rodrigo, Marcos Iglesias Caridad, expressed condolences through social media. In a Facebook post, he conveyed his sorrow, stating, “Sadly, a countryman of ours, very dear, has died in the night capea. We send a hug to his family and friends and are with them in their grief.” To honor Martín, a minute of silence was observed at 11:00 prior to the Toro del Antruejo event.
The Carnaval del Toro festival, which draws large crowds and is an integral part of local culture, has been celebrated for many years. The festival’s official Facebook page released a statement expressing shock over the incident, stating, “It’s one of the things we would have NEVER liked to see or live. We are shocked. It’s something we knew was happening in the libraries.” The statement reflected on the history of the festival and the notable safety measures that have been in place.
Photographs shared by the mayor depicted a solemn vigil in the town square, where community members gathered to pay their respects to Martín. Participants lowered their heads in a moment of reflection, highlighting the deep impact of this tragedy on the local community.
The Carnaval del Toro is known for the excitement and adrenaline that bullfighting brings, yet this incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks involved in such events. The loss of Eustaquio Martín has left a lasting impression on the festival and the people of Ciudad Rodrigo, who now face the challenge of reconciling the festive spirit with the gravity of this unfortunate event.
