Arsenal Makes History with Perfect Champions League Record
Arsenal has achieved a remarkable milestone in the UEFA Champions League by becoming the first team to win all eight matches in the league phase. Despite a late goal from Kairat, which prevented Arsenal from winning by two clear goals in every match, the north London club showcased their dominance on March 15, 2024.
The match began with Arsenal taking an early lead, courtesy of a goal by Viktor Gyokeres. However, the momentum shifted when Riccardo Calafiori committed a foul on Jorginho in the penalty area, allowing Kairat to equalize with a spot-kick. Following this, Kai Havertz, who had assisted Gyokeres’ opener, restored Arsenal’s lead with a stunning shot that curled past the Kairat goalkeeper. Although a third goal was later disallowed for offside, Arsenal’s performance remained strong throughout.
Player Ratings Highlight Arsenal’s Standout Performers
Following the match, player ratings provided insight into individual performances. According to Football London, Kepa Arrizabalaga received a rating of 6, having been deceived by the penalty kick. Ben White impressed with an 8, showcasing his playmaking abilities and leadership.
Cristhian Mosquera, rated at 7, earned praise for his aggressive tackling but also faced criticism for losing possession in key moments. Riccardo Calafiori, who was substituted at halftime, struggled following his penalty concession, resulting in a low rating of 5.
In contrast, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Christian Norgaard both earned 7s for their solid contributions to the team’s play. Norgaard, in particular, was effective in maintaining the flow of Arsenal’s attacks.
Kai Havertz stood out with a rating of 9, marking his first start in 357 days. His performance included a brilliant assist and a well-placed goal, demonstrating his return to form. He was substituted at halftime after a significant impact on the match.
Mixed Results for Other Players
Despite some individual brilliance, not all players enjoyed a productive outing. Eberechi Eze was rated at 6 after a subdued first half, while Noni Madueke received a 7 for his flair but was unable to deliver the decisive final pass consistently. Viktor Gyokeres, though he scored the opener, faced scrutiny for a glaring miss later in the game, resulting in a rating of 7.
Furthermore, Gabriel Martinelli scored Arsenal’s final goal of the match, earning an 8 after VAR overturned an offside decision. His persistent efforts added to Arsenal’s overall performance.
Substitutes also saw varied success. Piero Hincapie, Martin Odegaard, and Gabriel Jesus all received ratings of 6, with each contributing in their limited time on the pitch. Young players Brando Bailey-Joseph and Ife Ibrahim, making their competitive debuts, did not receive ratings but added valuable experience to their resumes.
Arsenal’s historic achievement in the Champions League adds to their legacy in European football. As they advance further in the competition, fans will be eager to see how this young and dynamic squad continues to evolve.
