Birmingham Man Sentenced to 16 Years for Child Sexual Abuse

A man previously employed at a mosque in Birmingham has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for sexually abusing children aged between nine and fourteen. Said Daauud, who worked as an IT support worker at the mosque, exploited his position to groom and attack five boys, using gifts such as AirPods and computer games to gain their trust.

Daauud’s criminal activities came to light after two mothers reported concerns regarding their sons in May 2022. Following these revelations, West Midlands Police initiated an investigation, which included gathering evidence from CCTV footage at the mosque. This footage showed Daauud engaging in inappropriate physical contact with the victims.

Details of the Abuse and Legal Proceedings

The police investigation revealed a disturbing pattern of grooming. Daauud communicated with one victim through over 4,000 messages on platforms like WhatsApp and Snapchat. In these interactions, he attempted to normalise his abusive behaviour, even encouraging the child to send indecent images of himself.

During a trial at Birmingham Crown Court, Daauud faced charges that included one count of rape, nine counts of sexual assault, and four counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity. He was convicted on all counts and received a sentence of 16 years on February 6, 2023. Additionally, he will remain on license for five years after his release and is subject to an indefinite sexual harm prevention order.

Detective Sergeant Thomas Finney from the West Midlands Police’s child abuse team expressed gratitude towards the victims and their families for their bravery in coming forward. He noted, “Daauud showed no remorse and took the case to trial, which meant the children had to give evidence and be cross-examined. We have made sure they’ve been supported through the process.”

The mosque where Daauud worked cooperated with the police investigation, providing crucial evidence that helped secure the convictions. This collaboration included sharing CCTV footage and details about the children involved.

Sergeant Finney highlighted the trust Daauud had built within the community, stating, “He used his position within the community to build a real level of trust with families, who were happy to let him stay the night and care for their children. He abused that trust in the most appalling way.”
