A 35-year-old British man has been arrested in Barcelona for allegedly attempting to abduct a two-year-old child in a park. The incident occurred on the evening of December 21, 2023, in the Sant Andreu neighbourhood of the city. Reports indicate that the child’s 12-year-old brother intervened, confronting the suspect and preventing the abduction.

Local police, known as Mossos d’Esquadra, responded swiftly to the scene after receiving witness descriptions. Upon detaining the suspect, authorities discovered he had prior convictions in the UK related to child sex offences. Although he originally hails from Manchester, the man is currently residing in Barcelona’s Zona Franca area, which is primarily industrial and located between the Port of Barcelona and El Prat Airport.

Upon his arrest, the man appeared before an investigating magistrate in a closed court hearing. He was subsequently released on bail, pending further investigation, but has been ordered to stay at least 50 metres away from the park where the attempted abduction occurred.

A spokesperson for the Mossos d’Esquadra confirmed the arrest, stating, “I can confirm an arrest took place following reports a man tried to snatch a child in a park in the Sant Andreu area of Barcelona.” The spokesperson declined to comment on the specifics of the suspect’s previous offences, including allegations of possessing a weapon in a school setting.

The quick actions of the young brother played a crucial role in thwarting the alleged kidnapping. Witnesses at the park reported seeing the boy attempt to punch the suspect, causing him to flee the scene. Local residents have expressed their relief that the child was unharmed and commended the bravery of the young sibling.

As investigations continue, the situation has raised concerns about public safety in the area, particularly regarding individuals with known previous convictions. The authorities are expected to conduct a thorough review of the suspect’s background and any implications for community safety.
