Chris Packham Raises Alarm Over Raptor Decline During Springwatch Filming

During recent filming for BBC’s Springwatch in the Peak District, renowned presenter and wildlife advocate Chris Packham expressed deep concern regarding the noticeable absence of raptors in the region. In an appearance on the BatChat podcast in November, the 64-year-old highlighted his troubling discovery while enjoying the picturesque surroundings and hospitality of the area.

Packham stated, “It was great. It’s very picturesque. Other people were enormously hospitable. It was a great place to be and we enjoyed our time there.” Despite the positive comments about his experience, he reported a significant lack of predatory birds, saying, “At no point during the recording of Springwatch, and I was there for three weeks, did I see a single Buzzard or a single Kite flying over.”

Raptor Death Zone Highlighted

This absence raised alarms for Packham, who described the surrounding landscape as a “Raptor death zone.” He explained that while the area protected by the National Trust is beautiful and well-managed, beyond its borders lies a troubling reality for birds of prey. “It’s very much like peering over the fence and into the desert really, which is tragic,” he remarked.

The term “Raptor death zone” refers to areas across the UK where illegal persecution and killing of birds of prey occurs. Packham expressed his dismay at the targeting of these birds, particularly pointing to the practices of grouse shooting, a controversial activity where large numbers of birds are driven towards hunters. “That kind of sums it up, doesn’t it?” he said, lamenting the juxtaposition of conservation efforts against illegal activities.

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) has criticized grouse shooting practices, particularly ‘driven grouse shooting,’ which they describe as “unique” to the UK. In a statement on their website, the RSPB called for government action to safeguard grouse populations and promote biodiversity. They highlighted, “There is growing evidence that the drive to increase grouse numbers has led to increasingly intensive, and sometimes illegal, management practices which are employed on an industrial scale.”

The RSPB urged the UK Government to introduce a licensing system to regulate grouse moor management practices in England and Wales, aligning with recent legislative changes in Scotland.

Positive Bird News Amidst Concerns

Despite these alarming revelations, there was some positive news for bird populations in the Peak District. The National Trust‘s Weather and Wildlife Review reported good outcomes for other bird species, including the pied flycatchers at Chirk Castle and Longshaw. The report noted that favourable weather conditions in spring contributed to a successful fledging season for these birds.

Throughout his career, Packham has shared his passion for wildlife and nature. He has also opened up about his personal life, including his close relationship with his pet dogs. During a previous podcast, he discussed his routine of wearing identical clothing for walks with his dogs, highlighting the comfort of predictability in both his life and that of his pets.

Reflecting on the challenges of pet ownership, Packham candidly addressed the pain of losing a beloved companion. He recalled, “In the past, it’s been disastrous. I didn’t learn much from losing the bird, and then my first dog died, Max.”

As wildlife advocates like Packham shine a light on the issues affecting raptors and other species, the hope remains that increased awareness will lead to meaningful action to protect these vital parts of the ecosystem.
