EasyJet Flight Diverts to Liverpool After Bird Strike Emergency
An EasyJet flight declared an emergency and diverted to Liverpool after experiencing a bird strike near Bristol Airport. The incident involved flight U22708, which departed from Madrid on the evening of January 28, 2024. Initially scheduled for a two-hour journey, the Airbus A320 was nearing its destination when it faced significant challenges due to a temporary suspension of runway operations.
According to AirLive, the runway closure was necessitated by a bird strike involving another aircraft, prompting a full inspection to clear debris. As flight U22708 circled Bristol, it began to run low on fuel, leading the flight crew to declare a Pan-Pan emergency. This status was later escalated to a full Squawk 7700 emergency, indicating a critical fuel situation to air traffic control.
The aircraft was subsequently diverted to Liverpool John Lennon Airport, where it landed safely at 22:57. Passengers were then refueled and transported to Bristol, arriving at their final destination at approximately 00:12 on January 29, two hours behind schedule.
This incident follows another emergency situation involving an Emirates flight from Dubai. On January 27, 2024, flight EK35 was scheduled to land at Newcastle Airport but was redirected to Edinburgh Airport after declaring an in-flight emergency. The Boeing 777 circled above Newcastle and Sunderland before executing a go-around procedure. After multiple attempts to land at Newcastle, the aircraft safely touched down in Edinburgh.
As travel disruptions continue to arise due to various incidents, both airlines are working to ensure passenger safety and timely communications. Further updates on these situations are expected as investigations proceed.
