Father Killed in Worcestershire Crash Involving Drugged Driver
A tragic accident in Worcestershire claimed the life of a father-of-three, Andy Hirons, who was struck by a driver under the influence of cocaine. The incident occurred on August 15, 2024, as Hirons, aged 52 and from Evesham, was riding his motorbike on the A4538 Pershore Lane when he was hit by a speeding BMW driven by Joshua Smith, 31.
Smith was convicted of multiple charges, including causing death by dangerous driving and driving while over the legal limit for a controlled substance. West Mercia Police reported that Smith lost control of his vehicle, which was deemed “unroadworthy,” and collided with Hirons as well as another motorcyclist. The police noted that at the time of the crash, conditions were wet, and Smith’s vehicle had significant mechanical deficiencies.
Details of the Crash and Conviction
Following the collision, emergency services responded, but Hirons was pronounced dead at the scene. Smith tested positive for cocaine at the roadside, a finding later confirmed by a blood toxicology report. His car was found to have dangerously defective tyres and brakes, with police stating that the nearside rear outer brake pad was completely worn out. The offside rear tyre had a tread depth significantly below the legal minimum, which contributed to the loss of control.
At Worcester Crown Court, Smith received a sentence of six years in prison and was disqualified from driving for eight years. Her Honour Judge Gilmore presided over the case, emphasizing the severe consequences of Smith’s actions.
Detective Sergeant Rose Hughes from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit expressed the hope that the sentence would provide a measure of justice for Hirons’ family. She stated, “Smith showed a total disregard for the safety of the public when he drove his car under the influence of cocaine… This case tragically shows how important it is to maintain your vehicle.”
Family’s Heartfelt Tribute
In the wake of the tragedy, Hirons’ wife, Tracey Hirons, paid an emotional tribute to her husband. She described him as a “strong and reliable” man with a deep passion for motorcycling. “Andy was my whole life,” she said, reflecting on their 30 years of marriage and the profound impact his death has had on their family.
Tracey highlighted the unique challenges faced by their eldest daughter, who has Down Syndrome, stating that the loss has been particularly distressing. “It is hard knowing that Andy will no longer be at my side,” she lamented. “His passing has left a huge void in our lives.”
In addition to his role as a devoted father and husband, Hirons was also a retained firefighter for eight years, actively contributing to his community. His family now faces the difficult task of navigating life without his support, as they remember the many joyful moments they shared.
The tragic circumstances surrounding Andy Hirons’ death serve as a stark reminder of the dangers of impaired driving and the critical importance of vehicle maintenance. As the community mourns the loss of a beloved family member, authorities hope this case will raise awareness about road safety and the consequences of reckless behavior behind the wheel.
