French Authorities Raid Elon Musk’s X Offices Amid Serious Investigations
The Paris offices of Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, were raided by the city’s cyber-crime unit as part of an investigation into serious allegations, including unlawful data extraction and complicity in the possession of child pornography. This significant operation was confirmed by the French prosecutor’s office, highlighting the ongoing scrutiny facing the tech giant.
The investigation commenced in January 2025, initially concentrating on content recommended by X’s algorithm. However, it has since expanded to encompass the company’s AI chatbot, Grok. According to a statement from the prosecutor’s office, both Elon Musk and former X chief executive Linda Yaccarino are expected to appear at hearings scheduled for April.
X has not publicly commented on the specifics of the raid but has previously characterized the investigation as “politically motivated” and a threat to free speech. The company also denied any allegations of manipulating its algorithm to promote inappropriate content. Prosecutors are exploring whether X may have committed several offences, including “complicity in possession or organised distribution of images of children of a pornographic nature,” as well as potential violations related to sexual deepfakes and fraudulent data extraction by an organised group.
UK Authorities Join Investigation Into AI Tool Grok
In a related development, authorities in the United Kingdom are also investigating the implications of sexual deepfakes generated by Musk’s AI tool Grok. These deepfakes often utilize real images of women without their consent, raising significant ethical and legal concerns. The UK’s media regulator, Ofcom, described the situation as “a matter of urgency.” Additionally, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) announced it would launch its own probe into the processing of personal data related to Grok.
William Malcom, executive director for regulatory risk and innovation at the ICO, stated, “The reports about Grok raise deeply troubling questions about how people’s personal data has been used to generate intimate or sexualised images without their knowledge or consent, and whether the necessary safeguards were put in place to prevent this.”
The investigations have attracted attention from various regulatory bodies, including the European Commission, which has initiated its own inquiry into X’s parent company, xAI, concerning the handling of sensitive images. The Commission is coordinating efforts with French authorities following the raid at the Paris office.
Criticism and Reactions from Industry Figures
The incident has not gone unnoticed within the tech community. Pavel Durov, founder of the messaging platform Telegram, criticized the French authorities for their actions. He expressed his views on X, stating that France is “the only country in the world that is criminally persecuting all social networks that give people some degree of freedom,” further adding, “Don’t be mistaken: this is not a free country.”
Durov himself faced legal challenges in France, having been arrested in August 2024 over alleged moderation failures on Telegram. He was released after the platform implemented operational changes, including sharing some user data with authorities.
As investigations unfold, the implications for X and its operations could be profound, potentially reshaping the landscape of social media regulation and data privacy. The legal outcomes of the inquiries will likely influence how tech companies handle sensitive data and prevent misuse of their platforms in the future.
