A jockey has been fined €250 for reportedly engaging in “serious verbal abuse” towards a car park attendant during a race meeting in Tramore. The incident occurred on January 1, 2024, when Liam Quinlan, a prominent jump jockey with 56 career victories in Ireland, was competing at the New Year’s Day event. The meeting attracted a sizable crowd of 7,500 attendees, who witnessed local trainer Henry De Bromhead claim victory in the feature race, the O’Driscoll’s Irish Whiskey Chase.

Quinlan, who rode Toor Moon in the day’s final race, experienced a challenging outing, finishing ninth out of ten runners, trailing by a significant 41 lengths. Tensions escalated when car park attendant Peter Keane informed Quinlan that the car park was full, leading to the reported altercation.

According to the Raceday Stewards, Keane alleged that Quinlan subjected him to “serious verbal abuse” after being told he could not park. The official report detailed the evidence brought forth by both Keane and Quinlan. While Keane maintained that he faced continual abuse, Quinlan defended himself by stating he was merely trying to park in what he believed was the jockey’s designated area.

The stewards ultimately found Quinlan in violation of Racing’s Rule 272, which addresses misconduct and behavior detrimental to the sport’s reputation. Despite Quinlan’s clean record, the officials decided to impose a fine of €250 in light of the circumstances.

Quinlan, who turned professional in 2019, achieved notable success when he rode Sequoiaspirit to victory in the lucrative Tara Handicap Hurdle at Navan in 2024. This season, he has secured six winners, contributing to his growing reputation in the sport.

The incident serves as a reminder of the standards of behavior expected from those involved in horse racing, reinforcing the importance of maintaining professionalism in all interactions, particularly in high-pressure environments such as race days.
