Pope Leo XIV Announces 2026 Travel Plans, Excludes U.S. Visit
Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope, has confirmed that he will not visit the United States in 2026. This announcement comes amid ongoing speculation about a potential trip back home, particularly following the pope’s vocal criticisms of immigration policies under President Donald Trump. The decision was communicated by Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni, who stated, “No trip to the U.S. is expected in 2026,” according to the Washington Post.
The absence of a U.S. visit aligns with the Vatican’s typical protocol of avoiding papal trips during election years, likely to prevent any appearance of partisanship. Observers suggest that the upcoming midterm elections may have influenced this decision. Cardinal Blase Cupich, the archbishop of Chicago, emphasized that Pope Leo sees himself as a global leader. He noted, “He wants to make sure people understand he serves the whole world.”
Global Focus for Papal Travels
Pope Leo XIV has already planned several international visits for 2026, which include destinations such as Angola, Equatorial Guinea, the Canary Islands, and Peru, where he previously served as a bishop. His first trip outside Vatican City was to Turkey and Lebanon in December. Leo’s travels are indicative of a strategy to reinforce his identity as a global figure rather than one who prioritizes his home country.
During his first public appearance after his election, the pope communicated in both Spanish and Italian, further reflecting his intention to connect with diverse audiences worldwide. While some Vatican officials had considered scheduling a visit to coincide with the United Nations General Assembly in September, they ultimately decided against it.
Immigration Advocacy and Political Engagement
Despite not planning to visit the U.S., Pope Leo XIV remains engaged with American issues, particularly those related to immigration. He has been vocal in denouncing the treatment of immigrants under the current administration, describing it as “extremely disrespectful” and “inhuman.” The pope has called for the U.S. government to enact “meaningful” immigration reform rather than pursuing chaotic deportation efforts.
Leo’s criticisms echo his pre-papal stance, where he expressed his views on social media. He had previously shared an opinion piece from the National Catholic Reporter, which stated, “JD Vance is wrong: Jesus doesn’t ask us to rank our love for others.” This post drew criticism from some of Leo’s political opponents, particularly given Vance’s conversion to Catholicism in 2019.
The pope’s approach, while less vocal than that of his predecessor, Pope Francis, still demonstrates a commitment to advocating for the marginalized. He has also encouraged President Trump to maintain strong alliances with European nations and to refrain from military action in Venezuela.
As Pope Leo XIV continues to navigate the complex landscape of global politics and social issues, his travel plans reflect a broader commitment to the world stage, prioritizing international outreach over national ties. The Vatican has yet to respond to inquiries from the Independent regarding the specifics of Leo’s travel agenda. As his papacy unfolds, the focus will likely remain on how he balances his role as a leader of the Catholic Church with pressing global and national issues.
