Prince Andrew Arrested on Birthday; Police Investigate Misconduct
Former prince Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor spent his 66th birthday in police custody after being arrested at his temporary residence on March 15, 2024. Several unmarked police cars descended upon the Sandringham Estate, confirming his detention under suspicion of misconduct in public office. The Thames Valley Police announced that the National Crime Agency is assisting in reviewing material from the recently released Jeffrey Epstein files.
The investigation stems from allegations linked to the Epstein case, which has garnered significant public interest. Assistant Chief Constable Oliver Wright stated, “Following a thorough assessment, we have now opened an investigation into this allegation of misconduct in public office.” He emphasized the importance of maintaining integrity throughout the process and assured the public that updates would be provided when appropriate.
Witnesses reported a surprising scene at the estate. Patrick Hill, a reporter for the Daily Mirror, described the arrest: “His birthdays have traditionally been lavish events held inside palaces amid revelry and dancing. But any celebration Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor may have been planning for his 66th birthday was unceremoniously halted at 08:00.”
A convoy of eight unmarked vehicles arrived at Wood Farm, Andrew’s temporary residence, where he has been living in exile. At approximately 08:50, three vehicles, including a Range Rover believed to belong to Andrew, departed the estate towards the village of Babingley. Soon after, Thames Valley Police confirmed the arrest of a man in his 60s, who was taken into custody while searches were conducted at homes in Norfolk and Berkshire.
As news of the arrest spread, media presence surged at the estate, leading to the assignment of a nearby field for parking to accommodate the throngs of journalists. By 13:00, at least 23 vehicles, including a television satellite truck, were gathered outside Wood Farm, highlighting the international attention surrounding the case.
In addition to the police investigation, multiple forces are examining flight records associated with Epstein’s infamous “Lolita Express” jet, assessing whether individuals, including then 17-year-old Virginia Giuffre, were trafficked to the UK. This inquiry adds another layer of complexity to the already fraught situation for Andrew.
The stark contrast between Andrew’s current predicament and his previous birthday celebrations could not be more evident. Once celebrated in extravagant style, his 40th birthday featured a black-tie gala at Windsor Castle attended by 700 guests, including Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. His 50th included festivities at the elite Swiss ski resort of Verbier and parties held at St James’ Palace and Buckingham Palace.
Throughout these events, Andrew has consistently denied any wrongdoing regarding his association with Epstein. Currently residing at Wood Farm while renovations are completed at his future home at Marsh Farm, Andrew’s situation now raises questions about his past and future.
As the investigation unfolds, Andrew’s 66th birthday will undoubtedly be a day he will never forget, marking a significant turning point in his life. The implications of this arrest will likely resonate far beyond the royal family, affecting public perceptions and discussions regarding accountability at high levels.
