Proposed 70-Mile Tunnel Could Connect US and Russia for £6 Billion

A senior Russian official has unveiled an ambitious proposal for a vast 70-mile rail tunnel connecting Russia and the United States. Kirill Dmitriev, Moscow’s special envoy for international economic and investment cooperation, estimates the project could be constructed for approximately £6 billion. This venture, referred to by Dmitriev as the “Putin-Trump Tunnel,” aims to link Russia’s Chukotka region with the US state of Alaska, marking a historic physical connection between the two nations.

In a series of posts on X, Dmitriev emphasized the tunnel’s potential as a symbol of unity and a catalyst for economic collaboration. He suggested that the project could be completed within eight years and proposed that it be built using technology from Elon Musk’s The Boring Company. Dmitriev argued that conventional methods would inflate costs to over $65 billion, while Musk’s innovations could reduce expenses to under $8 billion, roughly £6 billion.

Historical Context and Implications

The proposed tunnel would traverse the Bering Strait, which is approximately 51 miles wide at its narrowest point, but the additional distance would accommodate land connections and approach routes on both sides. The idea of a link between the two continents is not new; variations have been contemplated for over 150 years. Notably, recently declassified US congressional documents indicate that a “World Peace Bridge” between Alaska and Siberia was considered during the Cold War.

Dmitriev’s proposal surfaced shortly after a phone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, during which they agreed to meet in Hungary to discuss efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Dmitriev, who also heads Russia’s RDIF sovereign wealth fund, has been active in enhancing Moscow’s economic relationships abroad.

Sharing a graphic depicting the proposed crossing, which he also described as a “Kennedy-Khrushchev World Peace Bridge,” Dmitriev highlighted the tunnel’s potential to unlock joint exploration of natural resources and significantly expand trade routes between North America and Eurasia.

Challenges and Uncertainties Ahead

While the plan is ambitious, Dmitriev did not clarify whether it has been formally discussed with US officials. He also did not address how existing Western sanctions on Russia might impact financing, technology transfers, or cross-border cooperation. Dmitriev mentioned that the project could be funded by Moscow in collaboration with unnamed “international partners.”

He stated, “RDIF has already invested in and built the first-ever Russia-China railroad bridge. The time has come to do more and connect the continents for the first time in human history.”

As of now, neither Trump nor Musk has publicly commented on the proposal, leaving the future of this ambitious project uncertain.
