Ruben Amorim’s Tenure at Manchester United Ends After Disappointing Run
Ruben Amorim’s brief tenure as manager of Manchester United has come to an end after a lackluster performance over the past 14 months. The Portuguese coach was dismissed on Monday following a series of disappointing results, including a 31 percent win rate— the lowest of any permanent manager in the club’s modern history. Amorim’s record of 24 wins, 18 draws, and 21 losses from 63 matches has left supporters questioning the club’s direction.
In his final term, Amorim’s performance included a notably poor record of just 1.23 points per game in the Premier League, the lowest since the departure of legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013. Highlights such as a thrilling 5-4 victory over Lyon and a 2-1 win against Liverpool were overshadowed by defeats, including a humiliating exit from the Carabao Cup to Grimsby Town and a 1-0 loss in the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur.
First Match Reflections
Reflecting on Amorim’s first match in charge, which took place at the Portman Road Stadium against Ipswich Town, clear warning signs emerged. The game kicked off with optimism as Marcus Rashford scored within the first three minutes. However, United’s failure to maintain momentum was evident as Omari Hutchinson equalized just before halftime, resulting in a disappointing draw.
Despite Rashford’s early goal, Amorim’s tactical choices came under scrutiny. The manager’s insistence on a 3-4-3 formation did not yield the attacking prowess necessary to secure wins. Throughout the match, Ipswich exploited gaps in United’s defense, with several missed opportunities from the relegation-threatened side.
One glaring issue was the treatment of Rashford, who has since been loaned to Barcelona after being sidelined from the squad. Amorim had previously stated a preference for using a 63-year-old goalkeeping coach over a player who he felt was not giving maximum effort. This decision has proved costly, as Rashford has thrived in Spain, contributing seven goals and 11 assists so far this season.
Challenges and Tactical Stubbornness
Amorim’s rigid tactical approach ultimately contributed to his downfall. Following the defeat to Grimsby Town and a heavy loss to Manchester City, he expressed his frustration, stating, “I won’t change my philosophy. If they [the management] want it changed, you change the man.” This stubbornness was evident in his refusal to adapt despite clear indications that changes were necessary.
Another significant issue was the culture within the squad. In his first game, Alejandro Garnacho was presented with a clear opportunity to score but opted for personal glory rather than passing to Rashford. This mentality of individualism has plagued the team, resulting in missed chances and dropped points. The same pattern emerged even during a recent 4-1 win against Wolves, where selfish play overshadowed team cohesion.
Despite investing approximately £250 million in new players since Amorim’s arrival, the lack of improvement in tactical execution demonstrated a disconnect between resources and performance. Many of the signings failed to align with the manager’s principles, leading to a frustrating season for both supporters and players.
In conclusion, Amorim’s time at Manchester United serves as a reminder of the importance of adaptability and unity within a football club. With a clear need for change, the club will look to rebuild and move forward as they seek to restore their status among England’s elite.
