Temperatures are expected to drop significantly in parts of England as a yellow warning for snow and ice has been issued by the Met Office. The warning is particularly focused on regions such as Gloucestershire and Somerset, where a potential snowfall is forecast for tomorrow, January 2.

Snow accumulation could reach up to 5 cm (approximately two inches) in some areas, while overall snowfall in the affected regions is estimated to vary between 1 cm and 2 cm. A Met Office forecaster stated, “An area of sleet and snow is expected to move southeastwards across parts of England and Wales, lasting approximately two or three hours in any one place.”

Detailed Forecast and Temperature Expectations

The snow and ice warning will be in effect from midnight until lunchtime on January 2. In terms of temperatures, Gloucester could see a morning low of 1°C, which will feel like -3°C due to the wind chill. Cheltenham is expected to experience similar conditions, with temperatures dropping to -1°C but feeling as cold as -4°C.

Other cities, including Bristol and Bath, will also experience similar temperature fluctuations, with lows around 1°C feeling like -3°C. The coldest period is anticipated to occur early on Friday morning, between 6:00 AM and 9:00 AM. In Bath, temperatures may reach 0°C, with a wind chill making it feel like -4°C.

Safety Warnings and Recommendations

The Met Office has provided guidance for the public to ensure safety during these hazardous weather conditions. A spokesperson emphasized that “snowy, wintry weather can cause delays and make driving conditions dangerous.” They recommend that individuals plan their routes carefully and allow extra time for travel.

People are advised to check for potential road closures or delays to public transport and to adjust their plans accordingly. If driving, it is crucial to have essential items in the car in case of delays. These items include warm clothing, food, water, a blanket, a torch, an ice scraper or de-icer, a warning triangle, a high visibility vest, and an in-car phone charger.

The Met Office also cautions that weather warnings can change rapidly, urging people to stay informed about the latest forecasts in their area.

As winter weather sets in, residents are encouraged to take precautions to ensure their safety during the impending cold snap.
