Ten-Year-Old Girl Killed in Shooting on Way to Birthday Party

A tragic incident unfolded in Baixada Fluminense, Brazil, on January 31, 2024, when Sophia Loren Soares Camilo, a ten-year-old girl, was shot dead while traveling to her cousin’s birthday party. Sophia was in a vehicle with her father, Diogo Soares, when they came under gunfire from an armed assailant. The attack left Sophia critically injured, as she sustained six gunshot wounds, while her father also suffered injuries.

The fatal confrontation occurred around 17:30 local time in the Bom Pastor neighborhood. According to reports, Diogo was instructed by the suspect to stop the car. After complying and indicating that he was a local resident by activating the hazard lights, the assailant opened fire, discharging eight rounds. Despite Diogo’s injuries, he managed to drive Sophia to a nearby hospital, where she was admitted in critical condition.

A Family Shattered by Violence

Sophia’s uncle, Victor Rocha, described her as a “sweet, kind girl who had dreams.” He recounted her love for hugs and how she often shared her aspirations, even at a young age. In a poignant statement, he expressed the profound impact of the tragedy, saying, “This guy managed to destroy two families at the same time. He shattered the dream of a 10-year-old child and ruined the life of a father, not to mention the rest of the family.”

Sophia’s cousin, Clayton Soares, echoed the family’s devastation, emphasizing the urgent desire for justice. “We just want justice because otherwise he’ll be back on the streets soon. He destroyed two families. We are devastated. We just want justice and I hope that happens,” he said.

The military police reported that the suspect attempted to evade capture but was apprehended shortly after the shooting. Officers from the 39th Battalion located the individual and arrested him at the scene, seizing the firearm used in the attack. The case has been referred to the 54th Police Station for further investigation.
