Trump Gifts Florsheim Shoes to Cabinet Members and Allies
In an unexpected twist, President Donald Trump has taken to gifting leather dress shoes to cabinet members and visiting allies, specifically from the brand Florsheim. This practice, revealed in a Wall Street Journal report, has transformed casual interactions in the Oval Office into discussions about footwear.
The ritual often begins with Trump critiquing the shoes of officials, as he did during a meeting with JD Vance and Marco Rubio. “Marco, JD, you guys have s—y shoes,” Trump remarked, before consulting a catalogue for their shoe sizes. The president’s keen interest in footwear has led him to distribute Florsheim shoes with the enthusiasm of a seasoned salesman.
During cabinet meetings and informal gatherings, Trump frequently checks in on whether colleagues received their new shoes. According to sources familiar with the interactions, some officials have even tried on their new footwear in the Oval Office. One female White House official noted with humor, “All the boys have them,” highlighting the predominantly male dynamic surrounding the gifts.
While Trump’s gesture might seem benign, it reflects a broader concern about diversity within his administration. Research from the Brookings Institution indicates that his presidency has been the least diverse of the century, with women making up only 16% of Senate-confirmed positions in his first 300 days.
Founded in Chicago in 1892, Florsheim shoes, which retail for around $145, have become a presidential favorite. Trump reportedly began wearing the brand last year, seeking comfort for long days in office. Following his personal purchases, he opted to share the footwear with others, often covering the costs himself.
Vance and Rubio received their pairs after a meeting in the Oval Office in December 2022. Other notable recipients include cabinet members such as Pete Hegseth and Howard Lutnick, along with media personalities like Sean Hannity and Tucker Carlson and Republican Senator Lindsey Graham.
One cabinet member is said to have privately expressed dissatisfaction with the gifts, feeling pressured to retire his preferred Louis Vuitton shoes. Nonetheless, few appear willing to risk offending Trump by not wearing their Florsheims. The president has even mastered the art of guessing shoe sizes, instructing aides to place orders once he has made his estimates. A week later, recipients receive their brown boxes, often accompanied by a note from Trump.
The habit has become so routine that aides have noted a small stack of shoe boxes labeled with recipients’ names in a nearby office. Interestingly, Rubio has a history with Florsheim. During the 2016 presidential campaign, he drew attention for wearing glossy black boots that were initially thought to be high-end designer. His team later clarified they were Florsheims, valued at about $135, prompting Trump to quip about the height of the boots.
As this peculiar gifting trend continues, it raises questions about the image and culture within the Trump administration, particularly regarding its approach to gender and diversity. The shoes may symbolize more than mere fashion; they reflect the dynamics at play in a presidency that remains under scrutiny for its lack of representation and inclusivity.
