US Military Bases in the Middle East: Key Locations and Roles
The presence of U.S. military bases in the Middle East plays a critical role in regional security and operational readiness. Following heightened tensions, including threats from Iran to target American installations, understanding the strategic locations of these bases has become increasingly important.
Key U.S. Military Installations
In Bahrain, the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet is headquartered, overseeing operations in the Gulf, Red Sea, Arabian Sea, and parts of the Indian Ocean. This base is essential for maintaining maritime security and supporting U.S. interests in the region.
Qatar hosts the significant Al Udeid Air Base, covering 24 hectares (59 acres) and serving as the forward headquarters for U.S. Central Command. This base is home to approximately 10,000 troops and is vital for coordinating military operations across a vast area, from Egypt to Kazakhstan. In January, U.S. Central Command announced the establishment of the new coordination cell (MEAD-CDOC) at Al Udeid, aimed at improving air and missile defense collaboration among regional forces.
In Kuwait, several key military installations exist, including Camp Arifjan, the forward headquarters of U.S. Army Central, and the Ali Al Salem Air Base, located about 40 km (25 miles) from the Iraqi border. Known as “The Rock,” this base supports operations in a rugged environment. Additionally, Camp Buehring serves as a staging post for U.S. Army units deploying to Iraq and Syria, established during the 2003 Iraq War.
The United Arab Emirates is home to the Al Dhafra Air Base, located south of Abu Dhabi and shared with the UAE Air Force. This base plays a pivotal role in missions against the Islamic State and supports reconnaissance efforts throughout the region. While not an official military base, Dubai’s Jebel Ali Port serves as the largest U.S. Navy port of call in the Middle East, regularly accommodating U.S. aircraft carriers and other naval vessels.
Operational Bases in Iraq and Beyond
In Iraq, the U.S. maintains a presence at Ain Al Asad Air Base in western Anbar province, which contributes to the NATO mission and supports Iraqi security forces. Notably, this base was targeted by Iranian missile strikes in 2020 following the U.S. killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani. Additionally, Erbil Air Base in the semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region serves as a hub for U.S. and coalition forces, facilitating training exercises and intelligence sharing.
In Saudi Arabia, approximately 2,321 U.S. soldiers operate in coordination with the Saudi government, focusing on air and missile defense capabilities. Many are stationed at Prince Sultan Air Base, located about 60 km south of Riyadh, where they support air defense assets, including Patriot missile batteries.
Jordan’s Muwaffaq al Salti Air Base, located 100 km northeast of Amman, hosts the U.S. Air Forces Central’s 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing. This unit engages in missions across the Levant, enhancing regional security operations.
Lastly, in Turkey, the Incirlik Air Base, jointly operated with Turkey, is strategically important. It houses U.S. nuclear warheads and supports the international coalition against the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq. Approximately 1,465 members of the U.S. military are stationed at this base.
The strategic positioning of these military bases underscores the U.S. commitment to maintaining stability in the Middle East. The ongoing operations and collaborations with regional partners aim to address security challenges and enhance military effectiveness in a volatile environment.
