Wolverhampton Approves Solar-Powered Car Park Near Molineux Stadium

Plans to establish a new solar-powered car park near Molineux Stadium in Wolverhampton have received official approval. The project, set to be located next to the Wickes store off Stafford Road, will feature a total of 205 parking bays, including 82 electric vehicle charging points and 1,400 solar panels installed on carports. This development aims to enhance local infrastructure while promoting sustainability.

The unmarked land has previously served as an informal parking area for worshippers at the nearby Jamia Masjid Aqsa mosque and on matchdays for supporters of Wolverhampton Wanderers. The City of Wolverhampton Council’s planning department believes the proposal is beneficial, stating, “The [council] considers that the proposed development—comprising the formalisation and enhancement of the existing car park with marked bays, carports, solar arrays, EV charging infrastructure, sustainable drainage measures and associated works—is acceptable in principle and in detail.”

Details of the Development

The plans originate from an application submitted by Tomato Energy in July 2022. However, the company entered administration by November of the same year due to financial difficulties, with debts exceeding £3 million. Following this, the application was reassigned to Kenny Virdi from Senapt Limited.

In 2019, the council had already greenlit the use of the land as a car park, and subsequent plans were put forward to redesign the project in 2021. The new development will finalize the site, which is currently an unfinished area covered in gravel. It aims to create a well-organized parking facility designed to meet modern parking and green energy standards.

The completed car park will have clear markings for the 205 parking bays, which will include four designated for disabled parking. The installation of a photovoltaic (PV) solar canopy system will generate clean energy, which can be stored or used to meet local energy demands. A portion of the generated energy will be allocated to a community battery, providing a resource for local residents and further enhancing Wolverhampton’s green energy infrastructure.
