De Jong Criticizes Carvajal’s Provocation During Heated Clásico
Frenkie de Jong has publicly criticized Dani Carvajal for provoking teammate Lamine Yamal during a tense end to the recent Clásico match, where Real Madrid defeated FC Barcelona 2-1. The match, held at the Santiago Bernabéu, saw both teams engage in heated exchanges, culminating in a scuffle after the final whistle. This victory allowed Madrid to extend their lead over Barcelona in LaLiga to five points, breaking a four-match losing streak against their rivals.
Yamal faced significant hostility from Madrid supporters throughout the game, largely due to comments he made earlier in the week. Speaking on the Kings League’s YouTube channel, Yamal suggested that Real Madrid often benefits from questionable refereeing decisions, which provoked a strong reaction from the home crowd. After the match, Carvajal approached Yamal, making gestures that escalated the tensions, leading to de Jong’s remarks.
“If Carvajal wanted to speak to Lamine, he could do so in private,” de Jong stated after the game. “If he thinks he shouldn’t do things like that, he could call him. They’re teammates for Spain; they know each other. Why do you have to make a scene on the pitch?”
De Jong further defended Yamal, asserting that the teenager’s comments had been misinterpreted. “Lamine didn’t say that they rob, not directly,” he explained. “He’s there doing stuff for the Kings League, and people are saying things, but I have not heard Lamine saying exactly that. I can understand Madrid’s players, but the reaction was exaggerated.”
The atmosphere at the match was particularly charged, with fans jeering Yamal’s name during the pre-match announcements and booing him with every touch of the ball. Barcelona assistant coach Marcus Sorg, who filled in for the suspended Hansi Flick, acknowledged the challenging environment for the young player. “It could be that the atmosphere affected him a little bit,” Sorg commented. “Normally, he’s very motivated and plays well, but today it was not so easy for him.”
Yamal is also returning from a groin injury, which Sorg noted adds to the pressure on the 18-year-old. “He needs rhythm, more games at the highest level,” Sorg said. “It’s normal; he’s 18. We have to give him time and help him. The opponents adapt, so we work with him to help him bring his best version back to the pitch.”
Real Madrid’s coach, Xabi Alonso, downplayed the post-match scuffle, calling it a natural reaction to the game’s tension. “These scuffles have always happened, not just in these games. A lot of things were happening in the game. It can be healthy, as long as there’s respect,” Alonso remarked during the news conference.
Midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni echoed the sentiment, stating that Yamal’s remarks had added motivation for the Madrid players leading up to the match. “Personally, I like it,” he said. “They’re just words, there’s no bad intention. It motivates us a little bit more. If Lamine wants to talk, there’s no problem.”
The match itself featured intense moments, including controversial officiating decisions. Goals from Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham for Madrid, alongside a strike from Barcelona’s Fermín López, highlighted the high stakes involved. Madrid had an early penalty overturned and saw three goals disallowed for offside. They were awarded a penalty later in the game after an Eric García handball, although Mbappé’s attempt was saved by Wojciech Szczęsny.
The aftermath of the match continues to unfold as both teams prepare for their upcoming fixtures in LaLiga. The rivalry between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona invariably brings heightened emotions, making every encounter a highly charged affair.
